The Munising Leather Company, the largest sole leather tannery in the world, was on 12 acres of land on the eastern shore of Munising Bay in 1896. By 1905 the tannery turned out 500 hides a day, using 10,000 to 15,000 cords of hemlock and employing 150-200 men. Operations ceased in 1922 due to cheaper composition soles for shoes than leather. |
