Martin Reformed Church

The following information is from a brochure from the Martin Reformed Church, July 24, 1948.

The Reformed Church of Martin, Michigan has reached the milestone of twenty-five years service to God in this community. As denomination. According to the history of Allegan County, as near as can be ascertained, the first preaching in this comunity by any one was as early as the year 1838. In 1842 the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church was organized under Rev. Wilson Blain in the home of Thomas Monteith, Sr. The first church was erected in 1846, one mile south of Martin, at a cost of 1871 at the cost of about $800.00 The United Presbyterian Church was organized under Rev. D.S. Henry and met for a time in the home of Robert Patterson, Sr. Later the two bodies united in 1858 to form the United Presbyterian Church.

Our former church structure was erected in the year 1871 at a cost of $6000. The United Presbyterian Church, celebrated its fifteenth anniversary in 1892. Little definite information is available about the activities of the church in the intervening years between 1892 and the time when the Reformed Church was established.

In the latter part of the interim period, Student Winfield Burggraaff and Student Isaac Scherpenisse of Western Theological Seminary fulfilled summer appointments in the church.

During Mr. Burggraaff's second summer ministry, on July 24, 1923 a meeting was held to organize a Reformed Church at Martin, Michigan. The committee in charge of the organization was composed of Rev. J. Van Tomeren, Rev. C. Spaan, and Rev. G. Tysse. Members were accepted by letter and by confession of faith, these two composing the charter members of the church.
