  Boyle's Stump Extractor

Homer L. Boyle
1860 - 1926

Mr. Homer L. Boyle, of Fennville, called on us last Tuesday and exhibited a fine model of a stump extractor of which he is the inventor and for which he has obtained a patent in both the United States and Canada. Judging from the model shown us we should say the machine was excellently adapted for the work to be performed and Mr. Boyle claims among its points of superiority over other machines that it is so arranged as to allow the machine to stand at the side of large stumps while pulling; the mechanical power is so applied that a light weight machine of 1,000 pounds will pull the largest stumps; the lever takes a cant-hook purchase thereby lifting one side at a time; in pulling small stumps the lever is not used; the braces are adjustable with slotted ends which allows the machine to be taken up or spread out, and is the only machine that can be used on a side hill.

Boyle's stump extractor. A novel type of stump puller is made by Butterworth and Lowe, Grand Rapids, Mich. As will be seen in Fig. 41, there are three posts, set in a cap at the top in such a way as to rest securely against a shoulder in any angle. The feet of two of these posts are set in a strong iron stirrup, which has a broad rimmmed castor wheel attached. The other post rests on a strong wooden shoe, to which the whiffletrees are attached in moving it from one stump to another.

The unique feature of this machine is the machinery at the top, for the lifting power. A large steel screw runs up through the massive nut; this nut rests on a bearing which is a half sphere; between the two are anti-friction rollers which reduce the friction of the nut to almost nothing. Attached to the nut are three pulleys, one much larger than the others. Around eigher of these pulleys a wire rope 280 ft. long is passed. To this the team is attached to operate it. The small pulley is used in lifting medium and small stumps; the larger is for large ones.
