ISAAC N. HOYT AND MINOT HOYT, OF WAYLAND, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,902, dated September 21, 1875; application filed
September 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, ISAAC N. HOYT and MINOT HOYT, of Wayland, Allegan county,
and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification:h the following
is a specification: Our invention relates to the construction of a spring bed-bottom entirely of wood, riveted, screwed;
or bolted together, as herinafter more fully described. In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view of the bed-bottom,
showing one of the springs. a represents the upper or spring slat; c, the lower slat, resting on the bed-stead; b
diagonal blocks connecting spring-slat a with bottom slat c. d represents supports for bottom slat c, to
which any number of parts a b c, sufficient to form a spring bed-bottom, may be fastened, and held the proper distance apart.
Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the lower slats, showing slats c resting on cross-slats d parallel to
each other, and fasten slats c to them near each end. Between bottom slat c and top slat a, each cut of any desired
length, place diagonal block b, holding slats a and c apart, and with weight of mattress and persons slat a
will spring toward c, forming an easy, durable, and cheap spring bed-bottom. By making blocks d may be
placed closer together than otherwise, and the bottom slats can consequently be made shorter, for while the lower end of diagonal block
b is fastened back on slat c, near support d, the upper end of block b will project forward to accomodate
and support the longer spring-slat a, securing more spring-surface and motion from upper spring-slat with the use of less material
than can be secured by using the ordinary blocks for support, while at the same time is secured the peculiar spring motion of the outer
ends of the bottom slats c, not otherwise attained. What we claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters
Patent, is-- A spring bed-bottom, having diagonal block b, in combination with slats a and c, and
transverse supports d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.ISAAC N. HOYT. MINOT HOYT.
