City of Alpena
Built in 1893, the D. & C.'s City of Alpena was 266 feet long with a beam of almost 70 feet. Steel hulled with a gross tonnage of 1735. She was renamed the City of Alpena II in 1912, renamed the City of Saugatuck in 1921, renamed the Leona in 1939 and finally renamed the Normal in 1946 and scrapped in 1957. She was built at Wyandotte, Michigan by the Detroit Dry Dock Company. Owners other than D. & C. included Graham & Morton Transportation Company, Goodrich Transit, Michigan Trust Company, Roen Steamship LIne, John J. Roen, Northern Paper Mills, Ltd and finally Marathon Corporation of Canada. From 1936 to 1938, she was reduced to a pulpwood barge at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. |
