Antrim City (ghost-town) located in the North-West corner of Antrim County, was a small village on the shore of Lake Michigan. Nestled between shore and swamp with rolling hills and fields beyond, it held the promise of 'New Beginnings'. Many family's migrated into Northern Michigan during the mid 1800's by way of this little community on the Bay and found themselves settling in a beautiful land. Antrim City was established in 1861 and was prosperous for a short time. When the shipping operations found larger community's to do port with, and the loss of the mill, many family's moved on. To the north in Charlevoix County was the growing town of Norwood and to the south, Eastport; and Brownstone (tucked between two shores). The town of Antrim City is gone; but heading north on US31 past Eastport, there is an older road called old Dixie hwy. This road runs north parallel to the Bay, which is obscured by the fields and swamps of Cedar on the left side. The right of the road is lined with huge old maple trees, still being tapped for sap. Approximately five miles on, there is an old farm house, then a small white cemetery building and a gate with fence to the right. Looking towards the fence you would only see a small opening and then a steep hill. Looking closer, you will notice a few headstones. The main cemetery sits high on-top of the hill, with only a few stones along the road or half-way up. It takes some climbing to see why this old cemetery was placed on this spot. The view faces the ever-changing hues of Grand Traverse waters. The breeze is always cool and the large hickory's and maples stretch their aged-old limbs to give shelter from the storms. My lengthy text is due to my fondness of this very old and quaint hill-top. For this is where I found the beginnings of the search for my first family in Antrim Co., Michigan. The first baby to be buried in this cemetery was my cousin 'twice removed'; Chistopher D. Empey. died 26 Oct. 1871 at 8 months old. He died shortly after his parents; Ephraim E. & Martha (Samloy) Empey and siblings arrived in Antrim City. They came to this new harsh land, following Ephraims parents and his younger siblings. The cemetery is the resting place for the elders of my Empey family, from Canada. I am compiling the list from headstone readings. Many of these stones are so weather-worn or have extensive growth that it is impossible to read 'inscriptions'. There are also many stones broken or missing. I choose not to distrub the stones to do 'transcriptions of verse'...I am only listing names and dates of the stones that are readable. Perhaps you will find a link to your Ancestors among some of these adventurous Souls! |
