Buchalski, 81, of Lake Township near Caseville, died Thursday morning, Oct. 10, 2002 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born July 31, 1921 in Detroit to the late Michael and Theresa (Pietras) Buchalski. On Nov. 7, 1942, he was united in marriage to Jennie M. Krjewska at Resurrection Catholic Church in Detroit. In December of 1942, Bernie was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in the South Pacific during World War II and received a Purple Heart for being wounded in battle. In 1947, he became a Detroit police officer, and retired in 1981 as a detective with 34 years of service. He was a member of St. Roch Catholic Church, Caseville, Knights of Columbus #8042, VFW Post #1278, Detroit, Lieutenant and Sergeants Association, Detroit, Detroit Police and Fire Association, past president of the PRCUA St. Joseph Society #261, Detroit, and trustee of the Caseville Eagles Aerie #3690. Bernie enjoyed fishing, playing cards and bingo. Surviving are is wife of almost 60 years, Jennie; six children, Ron of Philadelphia, Bob Buchalski and his wife, Gail, of Detroit, Jim Buchalski and his wife, Debbie of Sterling Heights, Theresa Buchalski of Sterling Heights, Gerry Buchalski of Southfield, and Bernadette Bechtel and her husband, Rod, of Elkgrove, Calif.; seven grandchildren; his sister, Regina Rogos of Troy. Preceding him in death were twin sons, Joseph and Gerard Buchalski; two brothers, Ted and Florian Buchalski. Friends may call at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville, from 2-9 p.m. today where an Eagles ritual will be conducted at 6:30 p.m., followed by a K of C rosary at 7 p.m. He will be in state at the Wasik Funeral Home in Warren from 2-9 p.m. Monday. "Pete" Homewood Roger E. "Pete" Homewood, 68, of Bay City died Thursday Oct. 10, 2002 at Bay Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 2, 1934 in Union County, Iowa, the son of the late Earl and Lois Homewood. He lived in the Bay City area for many years. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, retired from the U.S. Coast Guard, retired from the city of Bay City as the superintendent of Oak Ridge Cemetery. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose #169 and the American Legion Post 18. He is survived by his children, Roger Homewood Jr., Rhonda Prill and her husband Daniel, Stacey Homewood, Lisa Felske and her husband Brian, Anne Wood and her husband Steve, Denise Steinhauer, and Greg Licht and his wife Barb; 12 grandchildren, Melissa, Vanessa and Trista Prill, Gregg, Shannon and Tara Nieten, Jason Wood, Lindsay and Cody Steinhauer, and Gregory, Sara and Megan Licht; one sister, Lois Morris and her husband Ron; three brothers, Edward Homewood, his twin; Russell Homewood and his wife Jude, Harley Homewood; one aunt, Lorraine Bowker; two sisters-in-law, Margie Blomshield and her husband Al, and Kathy Webb and her husband Walt; one cousin, Peggy Bluck; several nieces, nephews and friends. Macker Mark A. Macker, 38, of Harbor Beach, and formerly of Memphis, Mich., died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002 at Port Huron Hospital. Mark was born Nov. 19, 1963 in Detroit, a son of William R. and Marie B. (Warchuck) Macker. On Nov. 23, 1991, Mark married Michelle A. DuBaere at All Saints Catholic Church in Memphis. Mark was employed by Tower Automotive as a press operator. He enjoyed cooking, horseback riding, golfing and skiing. Surviving are his wife, Michelle; children, Brennan and Cortney Macker, both of Harbor Beach; parents, William and Marie Macker of Memphis; brothers, Ronald Macker and his wife, Gloria, of Minden City, Gary Macker and his wife, Shannon, of Brown City, William Macker and his wife, Ruth, of North Street, and Matthew Macker of Almont; sisters, Cheryl Savage and her husband, Michael, of Allenton, and Susan Macker, and Donna DuBlank, of Casco Township; 22 nieces and nephews. Memorial tributes may be directed to the family. Ronald Lee McMullen Ronald Lee McMullen, 53, of North Fort Meyers, Fla. died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002. Ron was born in Bad Axe and moved to Florida in 1957. He owned and operated Nalle Grade Nursery. He was very proud to have recently earned his captain's license. He loved his boat and the Florida waters. He is survived by his loving wife of 12 years, Georgia; his son, Pvt. 1st Class Robert McMullen, USMC, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; daughter, Diana McMullen of Roanoke, Virg.; parents, Robert and Anna McMullen of Fort Meyers, Fla., brother, Dr. Robert McMullen Jr. of New York City. He was the grandson of the late Cassie and Percy McMullen who were life-long residents of Huron County. Ron was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be deeply missed. A memorial service took place Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002 in Florida. Mark Walsh Mr. Mark "Pete" Walsh, 74, of Ubly passed away Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, at his home on his first son's birthday surrounded by his wife and children. Pete was born March 29, 1928, in Tyre to the late Walter F. and Susan (McMillan) Walsh. He married Evelyn "Delores" Michalski on June 25, 1949, at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. She preceded him in death on Sept. 9, 1985. He married Geraldine Rutkowski on Nov. 12, 1988, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Freiburg. Pete attended Cumber Country School and Ubly High School. He worked at Kellogg's in Battle Creek and at Pontiac Motors and Chrysler in Detroit for about 14 years. He was a lifelong dairy farmer and businessman. He was a member of the National Farmers Organization. He was the former manager of the Cumber Bar Men's Slow Pitch Team and loved to play baseball for 30 years. He bowled for 32 years for different teams in Ubly and Argyle. He was an usher for more than 50 years at St. Ignatius. He enjoyed playing cards, reading, watching sports and spending his winters in Holiday, Fla. Memorials requested to the Family Discretionary Fund. Robert E. Peterson Robert E. Peterson, 57, resident of Bad Axe, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002 while on the job with the Bad Axe Fire Department. He was born March 11, 1945 in Cass City, son of the late Sheldon and Eleanor (Casey) Peterson. On July 24, 1965, Bob and Doreen Schroeder were united in marriage at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. Bob worked for Cass City Cable, Gulf Gas Company, Peterson and Sinclair Gas Station, Reimann-Snyder Furniture, Lou's Pure Gas Company, Thumb Area Transit manager, R.J. Reynolds Company salesman, and owner of the Peterson Penzoil Oil and Lube Center of Bad Axe for 11 years. He was a 1963 graduate of Bad Axe High School. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, playing cards, and being with family and friends. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of the church ushers club. He was the captain of the Bad Axe Fire Department from 1986-1993 and a member of the department for 34 years. He was a board member of the Huron County Fire Department Association. Bob is survived by his wife, Doreen; one brother, Richard S. Monday, October 14, 2002 John Quinn John F. Quinn, D.V.M., 81, passed away on Oct. 12, 2002. He was born on Feb. 6, 1921, to Martin and Laura (Malpass) Quinn in Huron County. Mr. Quinn was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, past president of American Veterinary Medical Association, Michigan Veterinary Medical Association and the United States Animal Association. "Doc" was awarded his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1943 from Michigan State University. John enjoyed playing cards, traveling and wintering in Florida. He was an avid reader and gardener. Mr. Quinn was known for his sense of humor and his story telling. His family and friends were very important to him. He was a proud member of the V.F.W.'s Dad's Club. John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Arlis; children, Eileen Kanemoto and her husband, Ted, of Fairfield, Calif., Mary Roderick and her husband, David, of Westphalia, Riley Quinn and his wife, Fran, of Westphalia, Betsy Rogers and her husband, Gale, of Portland, Tim Quinn and his wife, Libbie, of Brentwood, Tenn., and Phil Quinn and his wife, Patti, of Portland; grandchildren, Eric and Leslie Kanemoto, Ellen, Claire, and Jason Roderick, Megan and Martin Quinn, Anne and Pat Rogers, Sarah and Nathan Quinn, Anna Katherine, Dan, and Emily Quinn; sisters, Lucille Harper, Clara McMann, Eileen Ruff and her husband Norbert, Betty McGowan, and Jean Talaski; and many nieces and nephews. Russell, 86, of Venice, Fla. and formerly of Bad Axe, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002. She was born Dec. 9, 1915, in Ashland, Wis. Eilanca owned Russell's Men's Wear in Bad Axe until 1975 when she retired. She is survived by two daughters, Judith L. Russell of Green Bay, Wis., Patricia A. Russell of Almer, Quebec, Canada; two sons, Thomas P. Russell of Venice, Fla. and James L. Russell of Detroit; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The memorial service will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Our Lady of Lourdes in Venice, Fla. with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery in Port Huron. Rhea Young Rhea Edith Young, 74, lifelong resident of Bad Axe, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at Bay Regional Medical Center in Bay City. Rhea was born Oct. 27, 1927, in Elkton, to Lester Sr. and Fay (McCracken) Armstead. She married George Young on Oct. 9, 1948. He preceded her in death on April 24, 2001. Rhea worked for more than 40 years at Huron Memorial Hospital as a nurse and a physical therapist. She enjoyed camping, playing cards, and spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Rhea is survived by one son, Gary Young and his wife, Diane, of Elkton; two daughters, Janet O'Brien and her husband, Thomas, of Tulsa, Okla., Sharon Andrews and her husband, Jim, of Tulsa; six grandchildren, Tiffany O'Brien, Christina O'Brien, Greg Young, Kurt Young, Joshua O'Brien, and Nathan O'Brien; and two great-grandchildren, Brent Jimpkoski and Calic Young. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; a brother, Lester Armstead Jr.; and a sister, Betty Schembers. Wednesday, October 16, 2002 Edna Gascho Edna Gascho, 76, of Pigeon passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. She was born in Pigeon on March 15, 1926, the daughter of the late George and Lena (Keim) Swartzendruber. Edna graduated in 1943 from Pigeon High School. On Jan. 1, 1946, she was united in marriage to Gerald L. Gascho in Pigeon. He preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 1994. Mrs. Gascho was a homemaker throughout her lifetime, and adored her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a community volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program and at Country Bay Village. She enjoyed quilting and was a member of the Pigeon River Sewing Circle. Edna was a Christian and a faithful lifelong member of the Pigeon River Mennonite Church. Edna is survived by four sons, Dwight Gascho and his wife, Mary Ann, of Pigeon, Wayne Gascho and his wife, Pat, of Morgantown, Pa., Arlis Gascho and his wife, Marilyn, of West Liberty, Ohio, and Lyle Gascho and his wife, Jeannie, of Bay Port; 14 grandchildren, Chad and Tera, Vicki and Conrad, Kim, Katrina and Dave, Jonathon, Kevin, Lisa, LeAnn, Andrew, Carla, Trent, Evan, Lance, and Grant; six great- grandchildren; a sister, Velma Esch and her husband, Ira, of Mio; a brother, Glen Swartzendruber and his wife, Erma, of Pigeon; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Edwin Swartzendruber; and a sister, Katie Albrecht. Neiman, 88, of Cass City, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in his daughter's home in Cass City. He was born Sept. 2, 1914, in Bay City to John and Minnie (Hendrick) Neiman. Robert farmed most of his life. He retired from General Motors as a millwright and also worked many years in a sugar beet factory. Robert is survived by his children, Richard Neiman, of San Diego, Calif., Lila Arroyo and her husband, Luis, of Cass City, Elvin Neiman and his wife, Carol, of Sacramento, Calif., Marion Hyatt and her husband, Mack, of Ortonville, Robert Neiman of Walled Lake, Minnie Ilene Radick and her husband, Gilbert, of Vassar, James Neiman of Denver, Colo.; 20 grandchildren; 21 great- grandchildren; special companion, Lois Stover of Cass City. He was preceded in death by his baby daughter, Della Jean; and his brothers, Albert Neiman and Egbert Chase. Palitti, 74, of Port Hope passed away Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2002, at the home of her daughter near Elkton under hospice care. She was born on Aug. 19, 1928, to the late John and Frances (Higgs) Weston in Port Hope. On March 9, 1946, Sarah was united in marriage to Arthur Schave in Port Hope. He preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 1967. On April 20, 1968, she married Peter Palitti in Warren. He preceded her in death on Oct. 26, 1989. Sarah was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope and was a former member of the Port Hope-Grindstone Club and was active in bowling and baseball leagues. Sarah was a former employee of the Michigan Tubing in Warren, a licensed practical nurse at Holy Cross Hospital in Detroit and she especially enjoyed being a greeter at the K-Mart store in Bad Axe. She is survived by three daughters, Linda AcMoody and her husband, Howard, of Elkton, Kathie Cada and her husband, Jim, of Almont, and Cheryl Remejes and her husband, Ken, of Mount Clemens; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several step grandchildren; and a brother, Perry Epley of Sterling Heights. Sarah was preceded in death by a brother, John Weston; and two sisters, Dorothy Kesterke and Luella Whalen. Steven Roggenbuck Steven Roggenbuck, 47, of Harbor Beach passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in Bay Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born on July 1, 1955, to Ruby (Morley) Roggenbuck and the late Clemens Roggenbuck in Harbor Beach. Steven was united in marriage to Donna Pleiness on Jan. 18, 1975, in Port Hope. He was an usher and a trustee at the Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach. He enjoyed wood crafting, helping others and his dogs. Steve worked at Tower Automotive for 25 years. Steven is survived by his wife, Donna; his mother, Ruby Roggenbuck of Harbor Beach; two sons, Eric Roggenbuck of Okemos, and Craig Roggenbuck of Mount Pleasant; three brothers, Alvin Roggenbuck and his wife, Marjorie, of Harbor Beach, Stan Roggenbuck and his wife, Barb, of Harbor Beach, and Ken Roggenbuck and his wife, Connie, of Harbor Beach; two sisters, Sharon Rice and her husband, Gary, of Port Hope, and Loretta Biniecki and her husband, Larry, of Harbor Beach; and one step brother, Brad Neal of Croswell. Steven was preceded in death by one brother, Clemens Roggenbuck and a nephew, John Rice. (Weiss) Greaves, 71, of Harbor Beach passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in Courtney Manor Nursing Center in Bad Axe following a long illness. She was born on July 5, 1931, to the late Charles and Vera (Weiss) Feets in Alaska. Bertha worked as a waitress and a nurses aid in hospitals. She grew up in New Brunswick, Canada before moving to the Harbor Beach area. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William Greaves and Carl Greaves. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach with The Rev. Mark Girardin, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Rockfalls Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to the time of services on Friday. Leonard Byarski Leonard Byarski, 81, Bad Axe, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at his residence after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was born June 15, 1921, in Kinde, son of the late Valentine and Florence (Krzeszewski) Byarski. Leonard Byarski and June Eden were marred on July 6, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight. He was a parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe, a member of Bad Axe Council 1546 of the Knights of Columbus, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific. Surviving are his wife, June; two sons, Gary and his wife, Kathy, of Rhodes, and Leonard Jr. and his wife, Lauri, of Sutton Bay; two daughters, Patricia Dudek and her husband, Richard, of Saginaw, and Donna Trimpe and her husband, George, of Southgate; 13 grandchildren, Carrie, Richard, Melissa, and Adam Dudek, Nicole, Gary Jr., Amanda, Alissa, and Andrea Byarski, and Brenton, Robin, Willard and Alexia Trimpe; 3 great grandchildren, Kayla, Aaron and Josh; one brother, Karl Byarski, of Kinde; and two sisters, Christine Yaroch, of Marlette, and Janice Kozlowski of Port Austin. Two brothers, Edward and Sylvester Byarski preceded him in death. The funeral mass will be 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. The Rev. John Killop, pastor will officiate. Cremation will follow. At the request of the deceased, a private family viewing will be conducted. Arrangements are being conducted through the H. W. Weitenberner Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Jean Uhl Jean Agnes Uhl, 61, of Filion passed away Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was born Oct. 13, 1941, to the late Thomas and Catherine (Schulte) Carabin in Minden City. Jean was a life long Huron County resident. She attended Christ the Redeemer Church in Auburn Hills and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rapson. She was a long-time member of the Altar Sodality of St. Joseph and St. Felix Church. She graduated from North Huron Schools and earned an associate's degree from Jordan College. Jean was a member of Port Hope Amvets and a shuffleboard player at Pete's Bar. She is survived by two daughters, Diane Uhl of Oxford, Lanore Uhl of Auburn Hills; one son, Raymond C. Uhl Jr. of Filion; one sister, Cecilia Branham and her husband, Harry, of Haines City, Fla.; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Walt and Mildred Uhl of Sun City, Fla., Earl and Dorothy Uhl of Ruth, Steve and Lucille Pelot of Minden City, Ada Murdock of Minden City, Lawrence and Rose Robinson of Harbor Beach, Merle Uhl of Westland, Gene and Gail Uhl of Lincoln Park, Lee and Pat Uhl of Lake Orion, Jean Uhl of St. Clair Shores; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters-in-law, Betty Uhl and Elizabeth "Liz" Uhl; and four brothers-in-law, Harold Uhl, Floyd Uhl, Norman Uhl, and Everett Murdock. Friday, October 18, 2002 Lester Eustace Lester Edward Eustace, 86, of Kinde died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born March 21, 1916, to the late Lestor and Grace (Lukens) Eustace in Bisbec, Ariz. Lester was married to Molly Lee (Niasmith). She preceded him in death in 1977. He married Mary Mroczek in 1978. She preceded him in death in 2001. Lester was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church in Kinde. He also maintained membership in the Port Austin U&I Club, Kinde Senior Citizen's, and the Knights of Columbus. He retired from Western Union where he had been employed for many years. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine from 1944 to 1945. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing, and visiting with family. Lester is survived by five stepsons, Edward J. Moore and his wife, Ruth Ann, of Bad Axe, Robert D. Moore and his wife, Mary, of Burton, John T. Moore and his wife, Margaret, of Kinde, Jim Moore and his wife, Ginger, of Kinde, Gerald Moore and his wife, Kathy, of Royal Oak; brothers-in- law and sisters-in-law, John and Betty Mroczek of Kinde, Ed and Marie Moore of Kinde; 24 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Kucharczyk, 69, of Harbor Beach passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, following an apparent heart attack. He was born Jan. 1, 1933, in Paris Township to the late Herman and Frances (Wruble) Kucharczyk. On Oct. 2, 1954, he was united in marriage to Lylan Swartz in Our Lady of Lake Huron Church in Harbor Beach. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the US Army overseas. Albert established Al's Restaurant in Harbor Beach in 1960 and the A & L Drive In in 1965. He operated the restaurants until 1978. He also was a dairy farmer until his retirement in 1991. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach and a member of the VFW Post 9344 of Harbor Beach. Albert enjoyed playing cards, dancing, and his garden. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and he loved being with his grandchildren. Al is survived by his wife, Lylan Kucharczyk of Harbor Beach; his children, Debbie Bender and her husband, Elmer, of Harbor Beach, James Kucharczyk and his wife, Darlene, of Harbor Beach, Douglas Kucharczyk and his wife, Evonne, of Gagetown, Kathy Guitar and her husband, Lavern, of Harbor Beach, Sherry Christian and her husband, Steve, of Harbor Beach and Michael Kucharczyk and his wife, Annette, of Port Hope; grandchildren, Todd, Traci, Tara, Chad, Shane, Chase, Daryle, Brent, Ethan, Jenny, Matthew, Charnelle, Kayla, Shaun, Noel, Adam, Amanda; two great grandchildren, Paxton and Evona; several nieces and nephews; two brothers, Elmer Cook of Florida, Harold Kucharczyk of Ubly; and a sister Marjorie Danielski of Ubly. Sweeney, 79, of Ubly, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at the Huron Medical Care Facility of Bad Axe. James was born April 6, 1923, in Sheridan Township to the late James P. and Flora (McLellen) Sweeney. He married Virginia Sowden on Oct. 25, 1947, at St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City. James attended the Sweeney K-8 school in Sheridan and graduated from Cass City High School. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church where he was on the cemetery committee for many years. He was a member of the Young Ideas Farm Bureau. He enjoyed hunting and teasing and playing with his grandchildren. James is survived by his wife, Virginia, of Ubly; six children, Ronald Sweeney and his wife, Joanne, of Bad Axe, Gerald Sweeney and his wife, Barbara, of Ubly, Bernard Sweeney and his wife, Mary, of Harbor Beach, Theresa Polega and her husband, Thomas, of Kinde, Dean Sweeney of Ubly, Donna Nunamann and her husband, Dale, of Middleburg, N.Y.; one sister, Anna McIntosh of Sterling Heights; 17 grandchildren; 2 great granddaughters. James was preceded in death by two sisters, Susanna Kolar and Margaret O'Hanley; seven brothers, Terrance, Angus, Martin, John, Dolan, Neil and Steve Sweeney. Funeral mass for James Sweeney will be 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church of Sheridan Corners. The Rev. T.J. Fleming, pastor will officiate.
