Olshove, 57, of Amite, Louisiana and formerly of Ubly, passed away on Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the Louisiana State University Medical Center after a long illness. Larry was born December 13, 1946 in Minden City to Ruth (Rutkowski) Olshove and the late Tony Olshove. Larry was a graduate of Ubly High School. He was a sewing machine repairman at the Ubly Seat Belt Plant. He was an SP4 in the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968. He worked in building construction in Detroit. He moved to Louisiana in 1994 and became a logger. He has worked and resided there until he passed away. He enjoyed restoring and refinishing antique furniture. He was a member of the Zurek-Graham VFW Post No. 6965 of Ubly. He is survived by two daughters, Paula Dawn Raiford and her husband, Chris, of Hammond, Louisiana, Amanda Olshove, of Magnolia, Mississippi; three grandchildren; his mother, Ruth Olshove, of Ubly; one brother, David Olshove and his wife, Anna, of Bay City; four sisters, Beverly Pawlosky and her husband, Jerome "Whitey", of Ubly, Karen Smalley, of Ubly, Ruth Oberski and her husband, Leo, of Birch Run, Becky McDonald and her husband, Scott, of Bad Axe; and nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. The Rev. T.J. Fleming, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with graveside military honors by the Veterans Posts of Ubly. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Monday, from 1 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. A parish vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Mary Jane Lomerson Mary Jane Lomerson, 66, of Kingston, passed away on Friday, June 25, 2004, at her home. Funeral services for Mary will be conducted at 7 p.m. tonight, June 27, 2004, at the Kranz Funeral Home, Kingston, with Pastor JT Mabe, of Mizpah Missionary Church, officiating. Interment will be at a later time. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Family Discretionary Fund. Monday, June 28, 2004 Dolores M. Canever Dolores M. Canever, 83, of Pigeon, died Saturday morning, June 26, 2004, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. She was born February 16, 1921 in Detroit to the late Ferdinand and Ella (Koths) Bolle. On September 10, 1949, she was united in marriage to Clifford J. Canever at Covenant Lutheran Church in Detroit. He preceded her in death on June 30, 1977. Dolores was a homemaker all her life living in the Detroit and Plymouth area. She moved to Sand Point in 1999 to be near her family. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Berne, and enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. She loved playing cards with her grandchildren. Surviving are two daughters, Christine Hill and her husband, Roger, of Grand Rapids, and Dolores Bumhoffer and her husband, Robert, of Pigeon; and three grandchildren, Clifton, Jonathan and Samuel Bumhoffer, all at home. Preceding her in death was her son, William Canever, in 1999. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at St. John Lutheran Church, Berne. The Rev. James Gorsenger, pastor, will officiate with burial in Glen Eden Cemetery, Livonia. (Volz) Hickey, 44, of Mount Pleasant and formerly of Sebewaing, died Saturday afternoon, June 26, 2004, at her home while under hospice care. She was born September 10, 1959 in Pigeon to Margaret (Anderson) Volz and the late Frederick Volz. She grew up in Sebewaing and was a 1977 graduate of USA High School. After high school, she attended Central Michigan University, Mid- Michigan Community College and received her degree as a Medical Lab Technician from Montcalm Community College. On August 27, 1993, she was united in marriage to Kevin W. Hickey in Mount Pleasant. Julie attended Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Pleasant and was a full time mother taking care of her two children. Surviving are her husband, Kevin; two children, Andreas K. and Kyle D., at home; her mother, Margaret Volz, of Sebewaing; her brother, David Volz and his wife, Karen, of Frankenmuth; and her sister, Joanne Brooks, of Sebewaing. Her father, Fred Volz, preceded her in death in 2000. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home, Sebewaing. The Rev. Tuesday, June 29, 2004 Joseph Lupp Joseph Lupp, 83, of Sebewaing, died at his home Monday morning, June 28, 2004. He was born May 21, 1921 in Sebewaing at the home of his parents, the late Steven and Anna (Zimmer) Lupp. At the age of 16, he began his working career at the John C. Liken Company unloading coal. He then went to the Michigan Sugar Company until he was 21. He joined the Army Medical Corp attached to the Air Force during World War II. On May 11, 1944, he was united in marriage to LeEtta Henne in La Junta, Colorado. They returned to Sebewaing after his discharge in 1946. At that time he became employed at the Pierre Marquarite Railroad that later became the C & O, retiring in May of 1982. His wife LeEtta preceded him in death on February 12, 1995. Joe was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Sebewaing, and the Sebewaing American Legion Post No. 293. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor and perpetual smile. He enjoyed fishing whenever possible and playing cards on a daily basis with his buddies. He is survived by his daughter, Joanne Bach and her husband, Bruce, of Sebewaing; three grandsons, Brian Bach and his wife, Marjorie, of Essexville, Rodney Bach and his wife, Karla, and Derek Bach, both of Sebewaing; three great-grandchildren, Brent, Ethan and Noah; his brother, Samuel Lupp, his wife, Marie, of Sebewaing; and his sister, Frances Burghardt, of Midland. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Adam and Herman Lupp. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at the Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rogelio "Roy" Ramos Rogelio "Roy" Ramos, 64, of Flint, passed away at the U of M Medical Center, Ann Arbor, on Thursday, June 24, 2004. Roy was born on March 22, 1940, the son of Pedro and Elida (Alvarado) Ramos, in Falfurias, Texas. When he was a young boy, his family migrated north and resided in Elkton. He later came to Flint to work for GM Buick for 35 years, retiring on April 1, 2002. He was a member of UAW Local 599. He deeply loved his family, extended family and many friends, was always ready to help everyone whenever he was needed, never wanting anything in return. He had a terrific sense of humor and received pleasure in bringing smiles and laughter to everyone. Roy was the most wonderful father and a very special "PAPA" to his grandchildren. He sadly leaves behind his son, Rogelio Roy "Shorty" Ramos and his special friend, Kathy Kennedy, of Evart; daughter, Tina Ramos, of Flint; grandson, Joshua; granddaughter, Amber; best friend, soul mate and fiancee, Karen Hart; mother, Elida Ramos, of Jackson; sisters, Georgina Santos and her husband, Alfredo, of Elkton, Mary Medina, Marie "Lupe" Ramos, of Jackson, Jane Wasierski and her husband, Larry, of Dover, Florida; brother, Pedro "Peter" Ramos, of Jackson; and 12 sisters and brothers-in-law; the mother of his children, Shirley Bland and her husband, Don; extended family "daughters", Keri Hart, Michelle Johnson, "grandpa" to Cassie, Jessica, Natasha, Corey, Adam and Matt; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father; two brothers; two sisters; grandparents; and his mother-in-law, Amelia Marie Blackstock. His family wishes to express a special thank you to the U of M Medical Center, helicopter flight team, all the doctors and nurses in the Medical Critical Care Unit who were the most compassionate and caring professional people to Roy and his family. A funeral mass was celebrated at noon today at St. Mary Catholic Church, 2500 N. Franklin, Flint, with Fr. Robert Copeland, celebrant. He will be laid to rest in Flint Memorial Park. Liberty Street, Suite 300, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104-2251. Wednesday, June 30, 2004 James H. Filion James H. Filion, 92, of Filion, passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at the Huron Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born on February 20, 1912 in Dwight Township, son of the late Alexander and Mamie (Smith) Filion. He married Leona Thick on September 6, 1941 in the Pinnebog United Methodist Church. Mr. Filion was an electrician at Active Industries in Elkton and at Pigeon Manufacturing before his retirement. He was a member of the Pinnebog/Grindstone City United Methodist Church and the Hubbard Winsor No. 420 F & AM Masonic Lodge. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by his wife, Leona Filion, of Filion; two sons, Donald Filion and his wife, Nancy, of Filion, David Filion and his wife, Mary, of Freeland; four grandchildren, Tracie Beatty and her husband, Abe, of Oxford, Suzanne Filion Foster, of Los Angeles, California, David J. Filion, of Freeland, Jennifer Filion, of Freeland; one great-grandson, Zachary Beatty, of Oxford. He was preceded in death by one son, Tommy Filion; one daughter, Sandra Filion Foster; and one brother, Burton Filion. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 2, 2004, at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery. Samuel Lupp Samuel Lupp, 76, long time Sebewaing businessman, died Tuesday morning, June 29, 2004, at his home while under hospice care. He was born July 8, 1927 in Sebewaing at the home of his parents, the late Steven and Anne (Zimmer) Lupp. After high school, Sam joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II and in occupied Japan. When he returned to Sebewaing, he worked several places before starting his own business, Lupp Signs. On July 17, 1948, he was united in marriage to Marie E. Kunisch at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing. Both he and his wife were still painting and producing signs, 56 years later, never retiring. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing. Sam loved being around people, visiting and helping whomever he could. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and just being out-of-doors. He is survived by his wife, Marie; two sons, Marshall Lupp and his wife, Kathy, of Essexville, and Greg Lupp and his wife, Susan, of Sebewaing; two daughters, Christine Licht and her husband, Fred, and Jackie Freiburger and her husband, Paul, both of Sebewaing; seven grandchildren, Jeff, Brandon, Zach, Jeremy, Megan, Marissa and Janelle; a great- granddaughter, Taylor; and his sister, Frances Burghardt, of Midland. Preceding him in death were three brothers, Adam, Herman and Joseph. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 2, 2004, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing, with the Rev. Daniel Hahn, pastor, officiating. Visitation will be after 10 a.m. on Friday at the church. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Valley Crematory, Bay City. Merz Cory David Merz, 17, of Cass City, died Monday, June 28, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Tuscola County. He was born April 7, 1987 in Arlington, Texas to David and Lisa (Ambler) Merz. Cory would have begun 11th grade at Cass City High School in the fall. He played linebacker and tight end for the Cass City Red Hawks football team. Football was his passion. Cory was an independent young man and truly enjoyed spending time with his friends. Cory worked for the Northwood Condo Association and Robert Bliss. Cory is survived by his parents, David and Lisa Merz; aunts and uncles, Debra and Jim Plowman, of Bridgeport, William and Terri Merz, Jr., of Saginaw, Richard and Kathy Merz, of Saginaw, Sara Merz and her special friend, Eric Grim, of Saginaw; great aunt, June Mills, of Trophy Club, Texas; cousins, Ryan and Dylan Merz. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Mary Lou (Wald) Merz, Barbara (Cobb) and Frances Ambler; aunt, Mary Sue Merz, who died in 1995; uncle, Jim Merz, who died in 1968; and Cory's grandma, Mary Lou Merz, died about six hours after Cory. Thursday, July 1, 2004 Katy Jane Rader Katy Jane Rader, 12, of Bad Axe, passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2004. She was born on January 14, 1992 in Bad Axe, daughter of Carl and Cynthia (Weaver) Rader. Katy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rapson and the 4-B's 4-H Club. She had just completed the sixth grade at Bad Axe Junior High School where she was a straight A student. She played on the Bad Axe Girl's Junior Softball League and played the flute in the Bad Axe Junior High School Band. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, volleyball, softball, basketball, and showing her horse and cattle at the Huron Community Fair. She is survived by her parents, Carl and Cynthia Rader, of Bad Axe; one sister, Alissa Rader, of Bad Axe; one brother, Tim Rader, of Bad Axe; maternal grandparents, Gene and Marilynne Weaver, of Dearborn Heights; godmother, Jan Holz, of Bad Axe; confirmation sponsor, Alicia Heiden, of Bad Axe; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Percy and Lila Rader; and one cousin, Tracy McCrea. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rapson. Officiating will be Fr. James Carlson, pastor. A vigil service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Mary M. Duprey Mary M. Duprey, 81, died Monday, June 28, 2004. She was born in Detroit in 1923 to William Ahearn and Veronica (Mosier). Mrs. Duprey resided in Sandusky for most of the past 55 years, most recently at the Sanilac County Medical Facility. Staff in the Alzheimers Unit remember her as a resident who never lost her gracious and charming manner. In addition to being a loving wife and mother, she worked for 10 years for the Department of Veterans Affairs. She is survived by her children, Gordon, Jr. and his wife, Carol, Maureen Scully and her husband, Raymond, Daniel, and Thomas and his wife, Judy; four granddaughters; one grandson; brother, William Ahearn and his wife, Florence; sister, Therese Jackson and her husband, Michael; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Gordon, and her son-in-law, Mark Hund. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 5. 2004, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Sandusky. A parish scripture service will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Marsh Funeral Chapel in Sandusky. Friday, July 2, 2004 Richard "Dick" Miller Richard "Dick" Miller, 74, of Grayling and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away at home on Thursday, July 1, 2004. Dick was born on March 13, 1930 in Bay City to Hugh Harry Miller and Dora Leffler. He graduated from Grayling High School in 1948 and began working at Hunter's Dairy before entering the Army from 1948-1951. He then worked for the New York Central Railroad prior to entering the Michigan State Police Academy in 1957. He was stationed at the posts in Flint and Gaylord and retired from the post in Bad Axe. He and Joan moved to Grayling in 1989. He enjoyed golfing, computers and his family. He married Joan Thompson in 1950. He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Jodi Strong and her husband, Mark, Jamie Krug and her husband, Leonard, Jean Fisher and her husband, Gary, and JoEllen Kladzyk and her husband, Tom; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Cremation will take place on Saturday and by his request, no service will be conducted.
