Mrs. Mary Allen Dies Saturday - Was Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Newman, 
Pioneer Portland Residents, Spent Entire Life Here
Mrs. Mary Newman Allen, widow of the late George W. Allen, passed away at her 
home on Elm Street late Saturday evening. She had been suffering from frequent 
hear attacks over a period of years, but recently had been confined to her home 
because of severe seizures.
Mrs. Allen was born here seventy-four years ago, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. 
John Newman, pioneer residents of Portland. The family lives east of village on 
Looking-Glass Avenue, on the farm now owned by Edward Manning, Sr. There were 
two boys and one girl in the family, Henry Newman of Seneca Falls, New York, 
being the only surviving member of the immediate family. There are four nephews, 
one niece and several cousins.
Mrs. Allen was a graduate of Portland High School and taught here for several 
years, she was a member of Portland L.L.C.O.E.S. and was always active in any 
civic, social or charitable undertaking in the village. She was an artist by 
nature and for many years devoted time to painting. One or more examples of her 
art are treasured in many Portland homes.  
About 45 years ago she was married to George W. Allen, who passed away in May 
1930. For many years the couple occupied the home on the corner of Bridge and 
Elm Street now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bandfield. 
Funeral services were held at the Bandfield Chapel, Tuesday afternoon at two 
o'clock.  Rev. L.J. Rigleman, of Augusta, officiating. Bearers were Robert 
Salin, Martin Vermaire, Cloyce VanHouten, Leo Lehman, Harry Owens and Dan 
Watson. Interment was made in Portland Cemetery. 
Those coming from out of town for the service were Mr. and Mrs. Chase Newman of 
East Lansing; Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Newman; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dixon, Mr. and Mrs. 
George Burhans; Mrs. and Mrs. Weldon Allen; and Mrs. C.C. Ludwig of Lansing. Mr. 
and Mrs. Arlo VanHouten and daughter of Grand Ledge; Mrs. Sidney Swartz, of 
Algonac; Mrs. Carrie Allen, of Highland Park; Miss Maude McKishnie and Mrs. 
Middlefelt of Mt Clemens; and Mrs. Merritt Allen of Muir.
