Taps Are Sounded

Another Veteran has Answered The last Roll Call.

On Sunday last at about the hour of twelve the silent messenger sounded taps for
another of the veterans of the struggle of ’61 and the light and life of William
J. Barker went out of its earthly habitation to penetrate the mysteries which
surround the great beyond, he having attained the age of 66 years.

Mr. Barker was born in the state of New York in 1846 and came to Michigan with
his parents when he was only seven years of age, locating with them in the
vicinity of Battle Creek.  Later on he located in Leonidas where he resided when
the war broke out.  When the call for troops was made, Mr. Barker was among the
first to respond to his country’s call, and going to Burr Oak he enlisted in Co.
A, 11th Michigan infantry and served three years as a soldier of his country.

It was while on one of those severe marches over Southern fields that he
received a severe sunstroke, from the result of which he became a victim of a
spinal disease which after many years of suffering has finally terminated in his
death.

He was married April 24th, 1864, to Eunice D. Howe who still survives him and
five children were born to them: Owen J., William, Ernie and Mrs. Nellie Steele
of this city and Mrs. Mina Coles of Howard City, all of whom were present at the
last sad rites.  Mr. Barker had been a resident of Belding and vicinity for the
past 19 years and had many friends.

The funeral was held at the late residence on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock,
Rev. A. Secord speaking words of comfort to the bereaved ones, and the remains
were laid to rest in the family lot in the Otisco cemetery, followed to their
last resting place by comrades of the Dan S. Root Post.
