Barker, 84, of Portland passed away on Wed., August 22, 2001. He was born on Sept. 23, 1916 in Westphalia, the son of Jacob and Theresa (Zimmer) Barker. Mr. Barker was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Portland Knights of Columbus Council #2168. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army. He was a member of the Portland V.F.W. Post #4090, and a member of the St. Joseph’s Society in Westphalia. Mr. Barker worked for many years in Lansing for the United States Postal Service. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roman Barker; sisters, Loretta Kowalk and Lorraine Barker. Surviving is one sister, Helen Hoppes of Portland and several nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Charles D. Hall, pastor at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Rite of Committal following at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Lansing. Military graveside honors will be provided by the Portland V.F.W. Post #4090. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 1301 E. Grand River Ave., Portland. The rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. Thursday and 3 p.m. Friday. There will be a Scriptural Wake Service held at 8 p.m. Friday.
