The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Monday, February 22, 1960


Ernest Barnard, 80, a well-known Orange township farmer, died at 5:30 p.m. 
Sunday at Ionia County Memorial hospital where he had been a patient since 
February 18.  Mr. Barnard suffered a stroke December 1 and was confined to the 
Ionia hospital.  Later he was transferred to Butterworth hospital in Grand 
Rapids January 5, and was returned to the Ionia hospital February 18.

A lifelong resident of Orange township, he was born December 24, 1879, the son 
of Orange and Ida Kelly Barnard.  He was married March 16, 1910 to Bertha C. 
Peasley, who survives.

Mr. Barnard was a member of the LeValley Methodist church and had been a 
trustee and officer of the church for a number of years.  He was a member and 
held offices in the Farm Bureau.

Besides his wife, Bertha, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert 
Wolverton of Orange township, and Mrs. Robert L. Croel of Ionia township; six 
grandchildren; and three brothers, Oley of Elkhart, Ind., Ray of Portland, and 
Stanley of Carmel, Calif.  

Service will be at the LeValley Methodist church Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the 
Rev. Heath T. Goodwin officiating.  Interment will be at Portland cemetery.  
The family will be at the Boynton funeral Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7 
to 9 p.m.

Funeral service for Ernest Barnard, 80, was held Wednesday at the LeValley 
Methodist church with the Rev. Heath T. Goodwin officiating.  Organist was 
Mrs. Doris Larson.  

Mr. Barnard, a well-known Orange township farmer, died at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at 
the Ionia County Memorial hospital.

Bearers were Clarence Rudd, Roy Shook August Hoort, Dale Courser, Ora 
Walkington and Robert Sawyer.  Interment was in the family lot at Portland 
cemetery.

Relatives and friends attended from Ionia, Lyons, Portland, Lake Odessa, 
Saranac, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Elkhart, Ind. and Ypsilanti.

Arrangements were made by the Boynton funeral home.
