Powell Barnes, 86, who died Christmas morning at the home of her brother, Herbert Powell, 313 North Jefferson Street, were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the Stone funeral home. Rev. Henry L. Harms, assisted by Rev. George Woolcock, officiated, and burial was in the family lot in Highland Park cemetery. Mrs. Barnes was born May 16, 1857 in Ronald, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Powell, Ronald township farmers. She was graduated from Ionia high school and attended school in Grand Rapids. She was a kindergarten teacher in Grand Rapids and later in Chicago. September 4, 1889 she was married to William Barnes and the couple had lived most of their married life in Middleville. Later they moved to Florida where Mr. Barnes died in 1930. She was a member of the Orthodox Baptist church. Surviving is the brother, Herbert.
