The Ionia Sentinel, Tuesday, March 27, 1928

Ionia’s church, fraternal and social circles were saddened Tuesday morning by 
the death of Mrs. George F. Brown Monday evening at 8 o’clock from a stroke.  
Mrs. Brown had been about her accustomed duties during the day and answered 
the telephone about 6 o’clock when Mr. Brown called from the express office, 
where he has been employed for years, stating that he would not be home for a 
little while as he had some work to compete.  At this Mrs. Brown 
responded “All Right,” and it is thought that immediately she was taken 
severely ill as she called Dr. R. R. Scott, who went to the house and, noting 
her severe illness, called Mr. Brown home.  She lived but a short time, 
remaining conscious almost until the end.

Mrs. Brown was a native of New York, a daughter of Rev. and Mrs. D. D. Walden, 
and was born there July 1, 1866, but lived the most of her life in Michigan 
being a resident of Spring lake and Detroit during her young womanhood. Her 
marriage to Mr. Brown took place May 12, 1886, and he and one son George, of 
Dixon, Ill., survive her.  A long distance communication reached the son early 
last evening and he was to leave for Ionia at the earliest possible moment.  
The funeral arrangements will not be made until his arrival.

She held membership in Queen Esther chapter, O.E.S., and in the Ladies of the 
Maccabees.  She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and for 18 
years had taught the beginners’ class in the Sunday school and proved herself 
an able leader of little children, who knew the way into the hearts of infants.

Recently she had been through with two operations, one for the removal of an 
abscess on the side of her face and the second one for the removal of her 
tonsils and in spite of the accompanying discomforts following these 
operations she never complained and always spoke of the hoped for relief which 
they would bring in the most optimistic way.  Her death robs Ionia of one of 
its more energetic and faithful workers in church and social circles.
