Another veteran and pioneer citizen who passed away during the past week was
George F. Brown, whose death took place at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nellie
Fisk, west of the city, on Thursday, September 20th.

Mr. Brown was the eldest son of Enoch and Betsey Brown, and was born in Oakland
county on December 15, 1845.  At the age of six years he came, with his parents,
to this community and settled on what is now known as the Eggleston farm.  On
December 24th, 1863, he enlisted as a volunteer in Co. C. First Regiment
Engineers and Mechanics and was mustered out of the service on September 22nd,
1865.  On April 7th, 1870, he was united in marriage to Adelaide Gardner and to
this union three children were born,  Mrs. Nellie Fisk, Mrs. Fred Deitz and
Glenn Brown, who together with three brothers, Marshall and Wellington, of
Croton, South Dakota, and S. M. Brown, of this city and a sister, Mrs. Olaf
Houghton, of Westville, survive.  There are also seven grandchildren and seven
great grandchildren surviving.

Mr. Brown lived practically all of his life, except the time he was engaged in
the service of his country, in this community and was well liked by young and
old.  He was of a genial, kindly disposition and a man of high character.  In
July, 1927 he fell and sustained a broken hip and he has since been confined to
his bed at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fisk, where he has been given the best
of care and given all the attention that loving hearts and willing hands could
give him.

Funeral services were held from the home on Sunday afternoon at two-thirty
o’clock, Rev. H. S. Ellis officiating, and burial was by the side of his wife in
Otisco cemetery.
