Ionia Standard, 16 Oct 1908

John Q. Cressy died Wed. night, after an illness of nearly a year.  For 20 years
he was an officer of the State Reformatory, several years as deputy warden. 
Before this he was sheriff of Barry county eight years.  He was a man of
generous spirit and kindly impulses, and was an honorable and faithful official.
 He was a mason of high degree and 55 years standing.  He leaves a wife and two
children: Mrs. Gear of Grand Rapids and Frank Cressy of this city.  Eight
children passed across the dark river before the father.  His age was 74, and he
was born in Massachusetts, coming to Michigan when ten years old.  Brief prayer
service at the home Friday morning at 8.  Remains will be taken on 9:07 train to
Hastings for interment.
