Herbert J. Dunsmore, 88, of Lodi, Calif., passed away Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at 
his residence following a short illness.  He was born September 9, 1910, in 
Ionia.  He earned his B.S. degree in civil engineering and later his M.A. in 
environmental engineering from the University of Michigan.  He married Vera 
Mary Hurd in 1933 in Ionia.

From 1938 to 1948, through the Kellogg Foundation, he was the public health 
engineer of Calhoun County.  In 1948, he become chief environmental engineer 
for the Pittsburgh Health Department of Allegheny County, Penn.  Mr. Dunsmore 
was very involved in the Pittsburgh Renaissance Project, which encompassed 
urban renewal for the downtown area.  From 1966 to 1975, he was the director 
of environmental control for U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh.  In addition, Mr. 
Dunsmore was professor of environmental engineering in the School of Public 
Health at the University of Pittsburgh.  After his retirement, he served as a 
consultant to the governments of Yugoslavia and Venezuela on environmental 
matters relating to the steel industry.

He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Lodi.  He also was a member of 
the American Society of Engineers and was listed in “Who’s Who in 
Environmental Engineering.”  Mr. Dunsmore was a life member of the American 
Public Health Association, the Ionia County Historical Society, Ionia Chamber 
of Commerce, a member of Casa de Amigos of Casa de Lodi, and a member of the 
Widowed Persons Association of California.

He enjoyed traveling, collecting antique tools, collecting and restoring 
antique furniture, and gardening.  Mr. Dunsmore was particularly interested in 
old barns, which he photographed and lectured on the history relating to 
them.  

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Mary Dunsmore in 1986; and a 
brother, George Dunsmore.  Survivors include his friend and companion, Ruth 
Moseley of Lodi; two sons, David A. Dunsmore of Ohio, and Roger J. Dunsmore of 
Montana; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Ruth 
Brooks of Arizona and Alice Warden of Michigan.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at First United 
Methodist Church, 105 E. Main St., with Pastor Lawrence Hodge officiating.  
Following a noon luncheon, committal will be in Easton Township Cemetery.
