Portland, Aug. 23 - Roy Gates, formerly of Portland, was drowned in France 
June 16, while swimming in the La Serve river near Nantes.
The young man was born in 1895 in Portland and went to Marshall, Oregon with 
his parents ten years ago. Later he moved to Los Angeles, California, 
afterward going into partnership with his father on a ranch in Imperial 
Valley, Cal.  
He entered the military service in 1918 and went abroad with the American 
expeditionary forces as a member of the 115th Engineering corps.
The drowning occurred about 300 yards down the stream from the Pont Roussean 
bridge. It was in the evening when Roy and several friends were swimming.  
Divers from the regiment and engineer train worked for about an hour to 
restore him to life but to no avail. 
He was one of the finest, cleanest men in that organization, and his captain 
said his work was always done; he was a friend to all men.
People of this locality and residents of Portland and Orange townships will 
be shocked by the news.

Roy Charles Gates was born on May 31, 1895, the son of Charles Gates.
