PALO COMMUNITY MOURNS PASSING OF FRED GAUSS

Well-Loved Resident Stricken Friday After Week's Illness

Scores of neighbors and friends crowded into the Baptist Church at Palo Sunday 
afternoon to pay tribute to the memory of a respected citizen, Fred Gauss, 
whose death occured early Friday morning following an acute attack of an old 
malady. Rev. McGinnis of the Palo church conducted the services.

Mr. Gauss, who was 71 years old, received treatment in the St. Lawrence 
hospital last summer, following which his health was much improved, but a 
sudden recurrence of the ailment a week ago proved fatal on Friday morning.

His death removes from the vicinity of Palo a familiar figure, the village 
blacksmith, who continued with his trade until his fatal illness in the shop 
of his father, the late John Gauss.  It also removes from the county a 
pioneer, whose circle of friends was more than county wide.  His courteous and 
square dealings with men and his kindly acts in the community in which he had 
lived for 64 years of his life, makes his death an irreparable loss to the 
village and surrounding territory.

He was born in Ann Arbor and came to Palo with his parents when a child of 
seven.  Both  he and his wife who was Miss Kittie Eavey, to whom he was 
married October 25, 1905, were graduates of the Palo high school.  After her 
graduation from high school, Miss Eavey taught several years in the schools of 
the county and the city of Ionia before her marriage.  She died in 1914, 
leaving one daughter, Mrs. Fred Keister, Jr., of Ionia, who with the grandson, 
Fred Keister, the Third, and a sister Mrs. Rilla Hawley survive.

Mr. Gauss was a member of the Odd Fellow and Maccabee lodges.
