Ionia Standard, 12 Feb 1904

Mark Collins Gay was born at Jackson, Mich., on Jan. 31st, 1855, and departed 
this life on Feb. 2nd, 1904, at Butterworth hospital, Grand Rapids, Mich., he 
being the 23rd victim of Pere Marquette wreck at Paris siding 6 miles from 
Grand Rapids, on Dec. 26th.

Mr. Gay was united in holy wedlock to Miss Hattie Decker, of Green Bay, Wis., 
in 1880.  To them were born two sons: Ralph E. and Mark B.  Mr. Gay lived 
happily with his wife until that dread disease, typhoid fever laid low the 
whole family and took from him his beloved wife, Hattie.  After the death of 
his wife, Mr. Gay, and little sons, made their home with his parents, Mr. and 
Mrs. Aron Gay, who tenderly reared these young boys up to manhood.

His son Ralph was brakesman on the train coming from the east, while his father 
was on train running from the west, father and son both coming together in the 
fatal collision.  Ralph is now in Butterworth hospital with the loss of his 
right leg.  Deceased was a man of the strictest moral habits, and was highly 
regarded by the P.M.R.R. Co. whom he faithfully served for 25 years, as 
baggageman, brakesman, and at the time of the wreck was serving as brakesman on 
the ill-fated train coming from the west.

Mr. Gay was a loving son, always looking after the welfare of his parents, and 
with the help of his sons was their only support, and his death, therefore, is 
a severe shock to his aged parents who are both feeble in health.  He leaves 
besides parents and sons, his last wife, whom he married in Grand Rapids in 
1891.  Besides these are his brother Frank of Lansing, and his sister, Mrs. 
Dora Fuller of Howard City, Mich.

He was laid away to rest beside his wife and loved ones, in the family burial 
lot in Oak Hill cemetery at Ionia, to sleep the sleep that knows no waking in 
this life.
