Portland Review - Tuesday 22 October 1918
Melbourne Gilbert, who was ill with pneumonia when his wife died of the same 
disease, passed away Sunday at Edmore.  The remains are to be taken to Wyman, 
where his parents live, for burial and funeral services will be held 
Wednesday.  Mr. and Mrs. Henry Whitman will attend.  Mr. Gilbert worked in 
Portland several months, having been in the employ of B. J. Beebe & Son, when 
they were located on the Kent and James street corner.

Many business men and other friends were at the depot Thursday evening when 
the train pulled in from Edmore, carrying the remains of Mrs. Melbourne 
Gilbert to Portland, for she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Whitman, 
owners of the City Bakery, and the trip to the depot was a mark of respect.    
The remains were taken to the home of the parents, where private funeral 
services were held Friday afternoon, Rev. R. S. MacGregor officiating.  Death 
resulted from Spanish influenza.  Her husband was ill at the same time and had 
not been informed of his wife’s death when the funeral party left for 
Portland.  Mr. and Mrs. Whitman had been called to Edmore a few days prior to 
their daughter’s death and were accompanied on the homeward trip by Mrs. Kate 
Hinman, mother of Mr. Whitman.

Katherine Whitman was born in Portland Dec. 29, 1891.  Five years ago she 
married Mr. Gilbert.  She was of frail build and when pneumonia followed the 
influenza her constitution was not strong enough for a successful fight.  The 
parents who have had more than their share of misfortune, have the sympathy of 
the entire community.
