Grace, 75, of 940 Yeomans, retired superintendent of the once outstanding dairy operation at Ionia reformatory, died unexpectedly early Wednesday from a heart attack while vacationing in Ft. Meyers Beach, Fla. Born in Carson City in February of 1897, he was a son of Martin and Mary Roach Grace and lived on the family farm while attending school and graduating from St. Mary's Academy in Carson City. Following his graduation he continued farming the Martin Grace homestead until accepted at Ionia reformatory as a guard in 1937. He was later promoted to assistant farm superintendent and named superintendent in charge of the dairy barn, a position he held at the time of his retirement in 1962. Mr. Grace married Marie McCarthy at St. Mary's church in Carson City October 27, 1920, and the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1970. Since his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Grace had spent part of the winter months in Florida the past several years. The couple had moved to Ionia in 1939 and made their home here since. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and of World War I, having served with the United States Army. Surviving besides his wife Marie are two sons, Dave and Richard, both from Lansing; two daughters, Mrs. Marv Baker of Columbus, Ohio and Mrs. Mike MaGee of Ludington; three brothers, Nick of Carson City, Stanley of LaPorte, Ind., and Leo of Detroit; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Egan of La Porte, Ind., Mrs. Genevieve Murray of Plainwell, and Catherine Grace of Grand Rapids; 24 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The body is at Leddick funeral home where family and friends may call Thursday and Friday from 7 to 9 pm and Friday from 2 to 4 pm. Prayers will be said at 7:39 pm Friday at the funeral home. Services will be at 11 am January 27, at SS. Peter and Paul church, with Rev. Msgr. Edward Jaworowicz officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
