Wm. B. Harter was born September 29, 1851, at Ionia, Mich., and died October 9, 
1898, at Denver, Colorado.  After his schooling, his first business connection 
was with the dry goods house of Sherman & Mills, in this city.  He went into 
the First National Bank in 1872, as a clerk, and in 1874, took his father's 
place as teller.  He was afterwards elected assistant cashier and director, and 
served in that capacity until December, 1892.  Owing to failing health, he was 
unable to attend to business only a portion of the last year, yet the directors 
paid his salary, hoping he would recover and be able to resume his position.  
The bank directors passed resolutions highly commendatory of his long and 
faithful service.  He went to Denver last April, hoping the change would prove 
beneficial.  But this hope proved delusive, as his disease progressed steadily, 
resulting in blood poisoning.  This, in connection with financial reverses, 
caused great mental depression and nervous prostration, from which he had not 
strength to rally.  He was also a partner in the grocer business with his 
brother F. H Harter and was noted for his public spirit in the days when he was 
himself, being a stockholder in all the manufacturing interest of the city.



November 19, 1878, he was united in marriage with Miss Helen M. Boise of Grand 
Rapids, at the residence of her brother, Dr. Eugene Boise, a union of great 
happiness, resulting in two children, a son and daughter, to whom he was deeply 
attached.  In the spring of 1877, he became a member of the First Presbyterian 
church, and was a consistent and trusted brother.  He leaves this record:  a 
devoted son, brother, husband, father and friend.  His remains were brought 
from Denver, accompanied by his wife and his brother, F. M. Harter, of Kearney, 
Neb.  The funeral services were held at his mother's residence, Friday, Oct. 
13, conducted by the Rev. J. T. Oxtoby, D. D., pastor of the church of which he 
was a member.



There was a large attendance of relatives and friends, and the floral tributes 
from loving hands were beautiful and appropriate.  From out the city were:  
Fred M Harter, Kearney, Neb.; Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Rogers, Dr. and Mrs. Boise, 
Grand Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Rowley, Mrs. E. O. Clark, Lansing; Mr. and 
Mrs. O. C. Townsend, and Byron Brayton, Hubbardston; Gaylord Harter, Ronald.  
The pall bearers were:  F. A. Sessions, H. B. Weber, K. R. Smith, J. T. Webber, 
C. B. Wardle and C. H Putney.  After life's fitful fever, he sleeps well, in 
the hopes of the resurrection through our Lord Jesus Christ, in the family lot 
in Oak Hill Cemetery.
