The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Monday, March 5, 1928

The dead body of Fred Hass, 84 years old, was found lying in the backyard of 
his home at 418 Allen street about 9 o’clock Sunday morning by his son Fred a 
few minutes after the aged man had gone out to feed his chickens and attend to 
his usual chores.  Heart disease is believed to have caused his demise.

Mr. Hass, who was born in Germany, came to this country 55 years ago, coming 
directly to Ionia and had since resided here.  For many years he was employed 
at the Gorham Lumber company’s yards and it successor, the Marshall-Wright 
Lumber company.  During the past several years Mr. Hass had been practically 
blind, and for this reason members of his family usually observed the elderly 
man’s actions whenever he left the house, and it was in pursuing this custom 
that his death was discovered.

Funeral services will be held from the home Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock 
and at St. John’s Lutheran church at 1:30, with Rev. B. H. Succop 
officiating.  Interment will be made in Highland Park cemetery. 

Surviving the deceased are his wife, three sons, Fred, who is employed at 
Lasing but spends the weekends at home here; Frank also of Ionia, and Amil, of 
Saginaw, and three daughters, Mrs. Charles Kosbar and Mrs. John Rammacher, of 
Ionia, and Mrs. Anna Shellbarger, of Kalamazoo.
