He served nearly three years during the civil war, enlisting at Hartford, VanBuren county, in August 1862, in the 19th Mich. Infantry, from which he was discharged Jan. 20, 1863, to enter the marine brigade, with which he served until January, 1865. He was the son of William Heald, and a nephew of Thos. Heald, a pioneer of Orleans. He became a resident of Ionia after the war and for a time was in the employ of the D. L. & N. railroad. Twenty-five years ago be bought the L. H. Colton farm in Easton, where he lived until a year or two ago, when he moved into city. He leaves a wife and two children: Claude, on the homestead farm, and Mrs. Levi Marshall of this city.
