Daily Sentinel-Standard - Thursday, July 21, 1932

Ernest C. Holtz, 37, died at the home of his mother, Mrs. Anna Holtz, 645 North 
Rich street, at 6:45 Wednesday evening following a 13 year illness with 
tuberculosis. Funeral services will be held at the home Saturday afternoon at 
1:30 and at the Lutheran church at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in Highland Park 
cemetery. Rev. B. H. Succop will be in charge of the services. Members of the 
American Legion will act as escort and a full military burial service will be 
given.

Mr. Holz was born in Ionia in the same room where he died. He finished the 
Lutheran school and completed his eighth grade school work in the public 
schools. He entered the employ of the Ionia Sentinel-Standard printing office 
to work as a pressman. June 26, 1918, he was called from the pressroom to enter 
the World war. He became a member of the 86th artillery and served nine months 
across, mostly in light skirmishes. He received his discharge from the war in 
April, 1919. Returning to Ionia, not in the best of health but ambitious, he 
again returned to the pressroom of the Ionia Sentinel-Standard to work being 
compelled in the spring of 1920 to quit because of ill health. Early that 
summer he entered a private sanitarium at Kalamazoo and later was transferred 
to the military hospital at Camp Custer.

Uncomplainingly he fought the disease with the same remarkable courage that he 
faced the hardships of the battlefield. He spent two years during the long 
illness at his home among friends, but always following to a letter with the 
precision of a well-trained soldier the schedule for rest, diet, and exercise 
that had been given him. As the months wore on he kept losing a little and he 
again returned to Battle Creek for scientific treatment. He was transferred to 
Ann Arbor and last October submitted to three major operations. He rapidly 
failed and early this spring submitted to the fourth operation. Three weeks ago 
he was brought back to his home to end his days among his relatives and 
friends. 

Surviving are the mother, Mrs. Anna Holtz; three brothers, Frank of Chicago; 
Leonard, of Ionia, Herbert, of Chicago; three sisters, Mrs. William Phinney, 
Mrs. Chester Settle and Miss Irene Holtz, Muskegon.
