                                OBITUARY
GEORGE W. KOUTZ

George W. Koutz was born Dec. 21, 1823 in Cumberland county, Penn. and died at 
his home in Lake Odessa on Thursday March 2, 1911, age 87 years, 2 months, 11 
days.He was the oldest child in a family of ten children, and he lived to  
survive them all excepting two boys and one girl. When he was about thirteen 
years of age his people moved from Pennsylvania to Stark county, O., where they 
lived for about twenty years, the subject of our sketch growing to mature 
manhood there. In November 1850 he was united there in marriage to Miss 
Elizabeth Brownbarger and not long after he and his people moved to Michigan, 
settling in north eastern, Ionia county. In 1853 Mr.and Mrs.George Koutz moved 
into Odessa township settling on the tract of land previously purchased in the 
north eastern part of the township, then a wilderness practically, their nearest 
neighbor being a mile away. Here they worked and planned and saved, undergoing 
the many trying hardships and privations incident to pioneer life, and succeeded 
finally in hewing out for themselves and their family a good home comprising 
finally altogether 200 acres, now owned by the four boys E.D. A.J., C.J. and 
B.F. Koutz. To Mr and Mrs Koutz were also born two girls, now Mrs.John 
Hausserman of Odessa and Mr.C.F. Kauffman of Sebewa.

In 1893 the wife and mother was taken to the home above, leaving a devoted 
husband and family behind to mourn  her departure. Mr.Koutz remained on the old 
home farm until Oct. 23, 1902, when he was united in marriage to Mrs.Nancy Culp 
of Lake Odessa where he has since resided, their home being on sixth Avenue. Mrs 
Koutz now surviving him. Besides the wife and children he leaves 16 
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two brothers, N.D.Koutz of Lyons and 
S.C.Koutz of So.Dakota, also a sister, Mrs.Rachael Mabey of Sheridan,Mich.

Mr.Koutz was a life long member of the Masonic lodge, joining first at Woodland 
and then later transferring his membership to the Lake Odessa lodge.

Mr.Koutz was converted in early life and joined the Methodist Church, always 
remaining a faithful member.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the M.E.Church, conducted by the pastor 
Rev. Laity and was very largely attended.Interment was made in Lakeside 
cemetery. The four sons together with Vern and Alvin Koutz, grandsons, acted as 
pall bearers.

Grim death has come again,
 And took our father home,
To the land whee all is bright as day,
 In that land beyond the tomb.

He's gone but not forgotten,
 Gone to that land so bright,
Gone to dwell with Jesus,
 Who was all his hope and stay.

How we'll miss thee father, Mother,
 How we'll miss thee, none can tell,
Jesus knows all about it,
 "Cause we've told it all to him.

Yes, we've told him all about it,
 Told him all the care we know;
He who bore our sin and sickness,
 He is just the same today.

Yes we're coming father, mother
 Yes we're coming, one by one,
There to clap glad hands to meet you
 Where no farewell tears are shed.

They are sleeping in the church-yard
 They are sleeping side by side,
They have gone to be with Jesus,
 Who was all their hope and stay.

Yes, they are gone but not forgotten,
 In that land so bright and fair,
May we all so live to meet them,
 Where no farewell tears are shed.

Rest dear father, rest dear mother.
 For thy suffering now is o'er.
You have crossed the wide, wide river
 And are safe within the fold.
