Hubbardston lost another pioneer and veteran of the civil war in the death of 
Amos A. Moore of Lebanon township, who died of old age at his late residence 
Nov. 18, 1916.  Mr. Moore was born in Java, Wyoming Co., New York, Nov. 17, 
1828.  In the fall of 1856 he came to Michigan and located in the vicinity of 
Hubbardston where he has since spent nearly all his life.  Having taught 
school in New York, he taught for a number of years around Hubbardston and 
near Sumner, Gratiot county.

Twice he enlisted in the army—first joining Co. D. of the 1st U.S. Lancers, 
Nov. 24, 1861.  The regiment spent the winter at Detroit, disbanded in the 
spring and March 24, 1862 he received his discharge.  He returned home in 
feeble health having suffered a severe attack of measles.  August 12, 1862 he 
enlisted in Co. K, 21st Mich. Inf.  The regiment left Ionia Sept. 12, and was 
soon engaged in active service in Kentucky.  He was in the battle of 
Chickamauga and also in the six weeks starvation time at Chattanooga when the 
union army was hemmed in by the confederate forces.  With Sherman he marched 
to the sea and then up through the Carolinas and Virginia to Washington, D.S., 
where he took part in the grand review at the close of the war.  He was 
mustered out of the army with his regiment June 8, 1865, with the rank of 
corporal.

July 4, 1866 he was married to Miss Lucinda Thomas and began to clear the farm 
and make his home which he has occupied ever since.  He served O.H. Read Post 
G.A.R. a number of years as chaplain and one year as commander.  He was a 
faithful attendant at the meetings as long as health permitted.  

His wife and three children, Mrs. R. S. Hawkin, of Muir, Rev. Arthur A. Moore 
of Bondmant, Iowa, and Ernest P. Moore of Hubbardston, survive his passing at 
the age of 88 years and one day.  

The funeral was held at the M. E. church, Rev. W. S. Philips officiating, and 
interment made in the west side cemetery.  He was a member of the 
Congregational church at Arcade, N.Y., and never transferred his membership, 
and he never lost the essentials of his early faith.  He lived a life faithful 
to all his duties, generous to a fault with his kindred and friends, and 
devoted to his country and his flag.
