Last Friday morning, Saranac mourned the death of Mrs. Axy Maria Olmstead, 87, 
who died of pneumonia.  Mrs. Olmstead was born at Chasey Corners, Burkshire 
county, Mass., to Rhoda and Simeon Buxton, February 11th, 1837.  She was 
married December 12th, 1853 when she was 16 years of age, to Solomon 
Olmstead.  Their first home was on a Berlin township farm, where they resided 
for nearly fifty years, later moving to Saranac for two years, then to a farm 
in Boston township, where Mrs. Olmstead was widowed in 1907, seventeen years 
ago, there after making her home for the remaining 27 years of her life with 
Mrs. Millard Hunter, at whose home she died, of pneumonia, Friday forenoon at 
two o’clock, January 11, 1924, lacking one month of being 87 years old.  

She was the mother of seven children, two of whom died in infancy.  Rufus 
Olmstead, firstborn, still resides in Saranac.  Lucinda Olmstead Settler 
having died some 35 years ago and Richard having died 10 years ago.  Jane 
Hunter, with whom she made her home, and Frank Olmstead, who resides in 
Riverside, California.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist church at 2 o’clock Sunday 
afternoon.  The Rev. Hayward officiated in the pulpit; Matthew Bradley of 
Ionia, as mortician.  Miss Irma Cilley of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. T. S. 
Barber rendered the music.  Interment was in the Saranac cemetery.  The out-of-
town relatives at the services were Mr. and Mrs. Verne Stevens of Lansing, Mr. 
and Mrs. John Williams of Barryton, Mr. and Mrs. John Stair of Grand Rapids, 
and Mrs. Cora Ceasar of Pompeii.
