Rice Jr., 69, of Portland died Noc. 22, 1997. He was born Jan. 6, 1928 in Albion. He was a veteran of WWII, serving with U.S. Army and retired with 26 years of service as a clerk with the Michigan State Police. He was a member of the Portland First Congregational Church, the American Legion Post #129 and past treasurer of the Portland Corp Walk and board member of the Portland area Service Group and Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by one half-brother, Leslie Shell of St. Louis; one niece, Beverly Richards of Sunfield; one nephew, Charles Ridenour of Grand Rapids; and three generations of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Neller Chapel, 210 Bridge St. Portland with the Rev. Robert C. Nixon, Pastor Emeritus of the First Congregational Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Portland Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel beginning Monday at 2 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 2 p..m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Those desiring may make contributions to the Portland Civic Players in memory of Mr. Rice.
