Ionia County News-Thurs. Nov. 21, 1940

Chesley A. Shaver, 68, a lifetime resident of the community passed away Tuesday
evening at 7:30 at his home east of town. He has been a semi-invalid for years and was
confined to his home but was not considered to be in critical condition until  Tuesday afternoon
when he suffered a stroke. 

He was born in Berlin township to Philip and Harriet Shaver, April 2, 1872 and lived
there until 1901 when he was married to Fidelia Courter and established their home in
Saranac. Mr. Shaver was of a mechanical turn of mind and during his earlier years made
important inventions. which afterward proved successful. He was founder of the C. A. S. Forge
works and later built Poultry fountains and when his health failed he sold his factory to
the Metal Products corporation which is operating at present on that site. Mr. Shaver was a
member of the Congregational church, the F. & A. M. and a past Worthy Patron of the O. E.
S.. Until his health condition required hime to retire he was active in civic work as well as
his church and lodge. 

Surviving besides the widow, Fidelia, are two sons, L. D. and Vincent C. an adopted
daughter, Mrs. Clarence Wood of Holland, two great grandchildren, Francis Jean and 
Dwight Shaver; two sisters, Mrs.Myrtie Anway of Grand Rapids and Miss Lillian Shaver
of Lansing and three brothers; Charles of Lansing, Lloyd of Saranac and Fred of
Minneapolis, Minn. The body will repose in the home until two o'clock Friday afternoon when
funeral services will be held in the Congregational church, Rev. J.W. Winger officiating.
Burial in Saranac cemetery. Arrangements in charge of the Sission funeral home.
