Ionia Sentinel - Thursday, Nov. 1, 1900

PEWAMO, Oct. 31. - Mrs. Christina Shoemaker, wife of Isaac Shoemaker, was born 
June 16, 1821, in Yates county, New York; married May 14, 1842, to Isaac 
Shoemaker, moved to Michigan in September, 1842, on the farm one mile north of 
Pewamo on which she lived until her death, being 58 years of age. She was the 
mother of six children, three sons and three daughters, all living and all were 
with her in her last hours and mourn the departure of a fond, loving mother. 
Mrs. Shoemaker was sick five weeks and bore patiently her affliction until her 
death on Oct. 24, 1900 aged 80 years her next birthday.

Mr. and Mrs. Shoemaker started in the wilds of Michigan in true pioneer life, 
their capital consisted of good health, a strong will and determination to make 
for themselves a home in their old age, and by hard work and economy they 
succeeded, having gathered together 200 acres of fine land with house and other 
farm buildings, a pleasant place to live. They were always hospitable, free and 
generous; always ready to help a friend in need and many are the friends that 
mourn their loss. Their door was always open to the needy, the hungry and needy 
were never turned away unfed or empty handed, and they were known as Uncle Ike
