Decorated WW1 Vet Is Dead

Maxwell E. Smith, 74, of 125 South Grove, Lowell, Ionia county’s most decorated
soldier of World War I, died Saturday in Butterworth hospital, Grand Rapids,
following a month-long illness.

He was awarded the distinguished Service Cross December 20, 1918 and the Italian
War Cross April 14, 1919.  Both medals were presented in front of the grandstand
at Ionia Free Fair after his return home.  He also received the French croix de
Guerre.

While serving overseas in the Alsace sector he was wounded and gassed in the
second battle of the Marne and received schrapnel wounds in the fourth battle. 
He also participated in the battle of the taking of Juvigny.

Born March 15, 1897, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Smith, he is survived by his
wife Doris; one son, Walter Smith of Chicago Heights, Ill.; three daughters,
Mrs. William Miller of Birmingham, Alabama; Mrs. Ronald Chesebro of Ada; Jean
Martines of Belding; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. December 28 at Roth-Gerst funeral home in Lowell, the
Rev. Hartwell Gosney of the Methodist church officiating.  Burial will be in an
Ionia area cemetery.
