Dec. 5, 1994 VERNOR D. SMITH Vernor D. Smith, 78, of Portland died Nov. 29, 1994. Mr. Smith was born in Brighton Aug. 25, 1916, the son of Clarence and Helen Wealthy (Spring)Smith. He was a 1935 graduate of South Lyon Schools and attended Coyne Electric School in Chicago, Ill. He was manager for Tri-County Electric Coop from 1954-1983, starting as plant operator in 1943. He formerly served as president of the Michigan Electric Cooperative Association and treasurer of the Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, and the Portland Board of Education. He was a member of the Michigan Rural Electric Committee(MSU), Portland Chamber of Commerce, and Portland Country Club. He served as a moderator, Trustee, and choir member in the Portland Congregational Church and was an Honorary Life Member of the F. F. A. Survivors include his wife of 43 years. Shirley Storz: daughter, Penny (Nicholas) Saites of Grand Ledge; son, James D. Smith of Lansing; and two grandchildren, Sarah and Eric. Services were held Dec. 2 at the Gorsline-Runciman Neller Chapel in Portland, with Rev. Robert Nixon, pastor emeritus for the First Congregational Church UCC of Portland, officiating.
