The Ionia Daily Sentinel-Standard, Thursday, December 14, 1950
Mabel S. Spencer, 73, of Grand Rapids, retired Central high school English 
teacher, died Tuesday afternoon in Butterworth hospital.  She had been in ill 
health since her retirement in 1937.  Miss Spencer was the sister of the late 
Mrs. Charles A. Irland of Ionia.

A native of Greenville she was graduated from Belding high school and the 
University of Michigan.  She taught English in high schools in Belding, Howard 
City, Jackson, and Grand Rapids.  She was a member of the Grand Rapids public 
school teaching staff since 1915.

Funeral services are to be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Metcalf chapel in 
Grand Rapids with burial in Ionia.

Miss Spencer was a member of the Fountain street church in Grand Rapids and 
Randall division, team five.  She was also a member of the former Women’s 
University club and Women’s City club of Grand Rapids.
