He had been in Lowell that day, returning to Ionia at about 10:30 that morning in company with three gentlemen friends. He was intoxicated and had a bottle with him. The four men left the train nearly together, and all proceeded westward on the railroad company’s right-of way. Steele fell down twice between the new depot and Hale’s elevator, a few rods west of which latter place the boys left him, after carrying him off the track into the grass alongside the right-of-way. His lifeless body was found at about six o’clock the same evening and an inquest has been in progress the past week to determine the cause of death, but nothing has appeared indicating any foul play.
