Jan. 19, 1939 FORMER IONIA CITY CLERK DIES AT 51 Donald M. Steele Passes After Illness of 12 Years The career of a life-long Ionia resident, who served 15 years in public offices, was ended Friday with the death of Donald M. Steele at his home here. He was 51 years old, after suffering with ill health for 12 years. Funeral services were held Monday from the home at 136 High street with burial at Highland Park cemetery. Rev. Adam J. Westmaas officiated. Mr. Steele was born August 27, 1881, in the home where he died, and after attending school in Ionia entered newspaper work. He was elected Ionia city clerk in 1911, holding that office and the position of city treasurer until 1920. Concluding this work in Ionia he entered newspaper work in Mt. Pleasant and Clio, becoming editor of a newspaper in the later town. He also worked at Lansing, with the state census bureau, and as county auditor under Gov. Fred W. Green. In 1934 he was appointed justice of the peace, a position he held until 1937, when ill health forced his retirement. Recently Mr. Steele was taken to the state sanitorium at Howell, but returned to Ionia a month ago. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Jessie Steele, and a sister, Miss Mary Steele.
