Dale Fred Townsend, 82, of 8164 Peckins Road, Lyons, died at his residence 
Wednesday.  He was born Feb. 29, 1908, in Clinton County, the son of Fred and 
Bessie Helmes Townsend.  He attended Muir Public Schools and was married, in 
front of the grandstand at the Ionia Free Fair, on Aug. 22, 1931, to the former 
Martha Lockwood; she survives.

They lived in Pontiac until 1947 when they moved to their farm home on Peckins 
Road.  He was a member of Lyons Methodist Church and the Golden Years Club.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Joy Miller of Lyons; four sisters, 
Elsie Fletcher of Houghton Lake, Beth Roberts of Ionia, Sunshine Simon of Lyons 
and Ruth Cotton of Ionia.  Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. from the Lyons Methodist Church with 
the Rev. Scott Otis officiating.  Burial will be in Lyons Cemetery.  Visiting 
hours at Hull Memorial Chapel, Muir, will begin Friday at 7 p.m. and continue 
all day Saturday and until noon Sunday.  A memorial for Lyons Methodist Church 
has been established, in care of the funeral home.
