Excerpts from Ionia Obituary

STEVEN DOUGLAS WALTER

Died August 4, 2026-age 71 of Ionia.
Born April 26, 1955 in Charlotte,MI to Daryl and Shirley(French) Walter.Steve 
graduated from Ionia High School with the Class of 1973.
In School he excelled in athletics, playing football, baseball and basketball, 
Basketball, in particular, was his favorite.
Married to Debbie Bollinger on May 14, 1977 in Ionia, raising 4 children.
After many years, Steve retired from being employed as a correction Officer.
He then dedicated many years driving the Ionia School bus, with many of the 
students that he coached basketball.
He also announced basketball games, connecting him to the Ionia community.
Steve also enjoyed on the golf course & relaxing with the daily Detroit News 
crossword puzzle.
He was a devoted University of Michigan Sports Fan.
Survived by his wife of 49 years, Debbie Walter of Ionia; his children, Nikki 
Walter of Ionia, Ryan (Royale) Walter of Ionia, Matt (Jessie) Walter of 
Chesaning, & Katie (Kurtis) Dollison of Livonia; his grandchildren; Tessa, 
Olivia, Parker, Mchalie, Blakely, Preston, Greyson, Easton, Benson, Caleb, and 
Tristan. Also many extended family members, and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents, Daryl & Shirley Walter, and his in-laws, Bud & 
Kathy Bollinger.
Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 16, from 1-4p.m. at Just Like 
Home, 330 Fourth St, Ionia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Steve's Family to 
establish a scholarship in his memory at Ionia High School, ensuring that his 
love of athletics, education and Ionia Community continues to inspire future 
generations.
Steve's legacy of generosity, humor, dedication and love for family and 
Community will live on in the lives he touched.
