                  Business Men Honor Memory of Merchant

           Close During Funeral Rites of Friend Who Died While on Trip.

Business men and friends in this community took an hour off on Saturday 
afternoon between 3 and 4 o'clock, for the funeral services of their friend, 
William P.Wood, who passed away suddenly, Wednesday evening of last week, at 
Louisville,Ky..  Mr.Wood in company with his wife and Mr.and MRr.Glenn 
E.Wortley, also of this city, were on their way to a restaurant, having stopped 
for the night after their first day of travel on a trip which was to take them 
first to Florida and then to a number of other  southern and western states.

The closing of the stores on a busy Saturday afternoon was a last fitting 
tribute and honor to a friend and business associate of many years in this city 
and the attendance of many hundreds of people a the funeral home attested to 
high esteem in which he was held.

Mr. Wood was born at Matherton, on Dec. 17, 1882 and came to this city about 45 
years ago. For many years he was employed by the late Abe Friedman and after the 
passing of the elder Friedman, managed a store here for Charles Friedman, son of 
Abe and Mrs.Rachael Friedman, still a resident of this city. About 10 years ago 
he founded his own store-Wood's Men's Wear - with his two sons, Robert and 
William Wood Jr., being associated in the business with him.

In April of 1912 Mr.Wood was married to Miss Nell Schmanski, of this city and 
Alpena, who with the two sons, RoBert and William Jr., and a brother, Frank 
A.Wood ,of Detroit, survive. Another son Thomas, died in infancy a number of 
years ago.

Mr. Wood was a member of the Belding Masonic Lodge, the chamber of Commerce and 
the Silver Lake Country Club. For many years he has been a member of the board 
of directors of the Belding Building & Loan Association. He was a man well liked 
by all with whom he came in contact and the news of his sudden passing was 
learned here with widespread regret.

Although not a member of the Catholic Church, Rev.Fr.Edward Meade, of the 
Redemptorist Order, of Grand Rapids, a long time friend of the deceased, 
conducted the funeral rites a the Ellis funeral Home, where the body has been 
brought after its arrival - by train at Grand Rapids,Friday morning. The body 
was placed in a crypt in the Mausoleum at River Ridge Cemetery and later will be 
interred in the family lot of St.Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers at the funeral were: Glenn E. Wortley, Adelbert M.Hall, 
Carter Churchill, George Skellenger, Ed.Stout and Ralph Rockefeller, Earl 
Wilson, Charles Cook, E.R. O'Keeffe, Ray Young and Byron Cook.
