Adrian, July 6, 1922
MRS. MARY PIERCE DIED THURSDAY AFTERNOON
Former Resident Expired at Daughter's Home in Adrian Township; Funeral Saturday

Mrs. Mary Pierce, aged 81 years, died at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the home of 
her daughter, Mrs. W. E. D. Still, in Adrian Township. Death was caused by a 
complication of diseases. Mrs. Pierce resided for many years on South Winter street in 
Adrian until a few months ago when she was taken to her daughter's home to be cared 
for.  Mrs. Still is the only immediate relative surviving her. The funeral service  
will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the C.H. Mott and Son undertaking 
rooms. 
The Rev. J.H.Davis of Rollin will officiate.
Mr. Pierce died about three years ago.

DIED IN A BUGGY
JARVIS PIERCE SUDDENLY PASSES AWAY SATURDAY
While Being Brought to the City After a Visit With Friends in Fairfield

The sudden death of Jarvis Pierce of 81 Dennis street, occurred at 3:30 Saturday 
afternoon, his death being the result of a third stoke of paralysis which seized him 
as he was being driven to his home in this city after a two weeks' visit with relatives
and friends about Fairfield. Death was almost instant. Mr. And Mrs. Pierce had made 
their headquarters while on their visit with Floyd Carpenter and the latter was 
bringing them to Adrian. As they drove down the Carpenter hill just north of Madison 
Center, Mr. Pierce remarked that everything was getting black. Mr. Carpenter in a 
glance say his serious condition and hurried to the home of Mr. Gander at the foot of 
the hill, but death had already come. He was carried into the house and Dr. Tayer 
summoned. The remains were brought in the Mott ambulance that evening, and the funeral 
arrangements include a prayer service at the house a 11 o'clock on Tuesday morning and 
the service proper from the Fairfield Baptist church. 
Deceased was born in Raisin Valley Oct. 21, 1841, and lived there as a boy, attending 
school there. April 1, 1871, he was united in marriage with Lucy Prentiss of Ogden, 
and their married life had been passed in Ogden, Fairfield or Madison, removing to 
Adrian only a year ago this month. Two children were born to Mr. And Mrs. Pierce, Cora,
Mrs. Elmer Milliman of Morenci, and Mary, Mrs. J. M. Williams who also resides at 81 
Dennis street. Beside the widow and the two daughters there are surviving a brother, 
William V. Pierce of 54 State street, one sister, Mrs. Nathan Davis, and one 
step-sister, Mrs. Jon Nash of 58 State street.

FRANCIS W. PIERCE, INSURANCE MAN, DIES
Engaged in Insurance Business For 41 Years

Francis W. Pierce, 74 years old, an Adrian insurance man for 41 years, died Saturday 
evening at his home at 505 West Maple Avenue. Although he suffered a stoke four years 
ago Mr. Pierce recently had been in good health.
Burial will be held in the family lot at Oakwood cemetery Mr. Pierce was born February 
1, 1867, in Madison township, the son of Myron J. and Martha Pierce. He attended the
district schools in Madison township and Evans Business College in Adrian. Between 1882 
and 1889 he was associated with his father in the milk business under the name of M.J. 
Pierce and Son. In 1889 he went to work for Roth & Van Dorn, farm implement and seed 
house, which later became the C.C. Van Dorn company. In 1900 while still employed at 
Van Dorn's  he became an agent for the Aetna Life Insurance Company and in 1908 was 
made a district manager for Aetna.
Mr. Pierce served in public office for a period of two years. He was elected alderman 
in the first ward 1908 and served until 1910.
Mr. Pierce married Miss Martha Anderson of Riga June 2, 1886, and she died July 27, 
1920. On March 27, 1923, he married Mrs. Myrtie J. Williams of Adrian and she preceded 
him in death Aril 27, 1941. He is survived by two sons, Leslie and Leon Pierce of 
Adrian, and two daughters, Mrs. Florence E. Fritz and Mrs. Mabel Derbyshire, also of 
Adrian. Three grandchildren Leslie, James Francis and Ruth Marie Pierce also survive.
