            We have not been able to find Vincent, Pearl or Maxine in census records.

            When she was 25 years old, Ethel married 37 year old Charles Haring.

            Charles was born in Kansas in 1870.

            Charles and Ethel were renting a home on Gilbert Street in Kalamazoo for $13 a month in 1930. Charles was a fireman at a factory. Their daughter, Ida, was doing office work for a manufacturing plant. Bernadine appears to have already married and moved away.

            Ethel died in 1940.

            When she was 19 years old, she married 23 year old Verne Hopkins.

Verne was born in 1896.

Verne and Monique showed up in the 1930 census in Blaine Township, Benzie Co., MI, with children Yvonne, Ardith, Ellen, Philip and Roberta. Verne was a stock/fruit farmer.

Monique died in 1976 and was buried in the Blaine Township Cemetery.

Verne died in 1990.

            When she was 22 years old, Florence married 31-year old Roger J. Beaton.

Roger was born in Michigan in December, 1877. At the turn of the century, he was living in Marinette, Wisconsin, where he had a job as a teamster.

            The Beatons owned a $4,000 home on Phelps Street in Kalamazoo in 1930. Their son, Charles, was named as “Charles Beaton Jr.” Roger was a night watchman for a paper mill. Their daughter, Dorothy, was a stenographer for a news agency.

            Pettrina was born in 1890. She is shown (left) in the photo below with Rufus’ sister, Mary (right).

            Rufus and Pettrina showed up in the 1920 census in Blaine Township.   

Pettrina died in 1935.

            Edra was born July 21, 1906.

            Edra died February 25, 1993 in Manistee.

            Mary Putney [Lester, Phoebe, Roswell], b. September 23, 1892, Blaine, Benzie Co., MI, a child of Lester King Putney and Julia A. Smith; m. (1) John Frederick Zilch; m. (2) Maurice Triplett; d. 1966; Blaine Twp. Cemetery, Blaine Benzie Co., MI.

            When she was 21 years old, she married 28-year old John Zilch. John was born in Indiana in 1886. In the 1910 census, he was working in Blaine Township, Benzie County, Michigan, as a hired hand for the Ernest and Anna Shigley farm.

            John and Mary lived in Blaine Township, Benzie County, Michigan, in the 1930 census. John was a fruit farmer. He became a freemason.

            John died January 16, 1951.    

Mary died in 1966 and was buried next to John in the Blaine Township Cemetery.

            Eva L. Putney [Lester, Phoebe, Roswell], b. June 5, 1894, Blaine, Benzie Co., MI, a child of Lester King Putney and Julia A. Smith; m. Archie J. Oliver, around 1914; d. 1976; Blaine Twp. Cemetery, Benzie Co., MI.

            Archie was born in Lake Township, Benzie Co., Michigan in January,1888, a son of Robert and Elizabeth Oliver. His father was a stone mason from Scotland, who had lived in Benzie County at least as early as 1870. He may have been related to Mrs. Margaret Lockhart, who came to America from Scotland around 1857 with her husband Hugh. There is a chance that he was also a cousin of Joseph Oliver of Pennsylvania, whose parents were born in England. He died prior to 1900. At the turn of the century, Archie was living with his mother and step-father, Matthew and Elizabeth Nugent.[1] Archie had seven older siblings, including Robert (1862), Luretta (1864), James (1866), Joan (1871), Isabelle (1873), Grace (1879) and Roy (1883). Five of them survived to 1900.

            In 1930, Archie and Eva owned a $3,000 home on Corning Avenue “Block O” in Frankfort with their three children. They were neighbors of Frank and Isabelle Calkins, Clifton and Myrtle Travis and the widow Elizabeth Nugent, who was listed as Roy Oliver’s mother. Archie was a laborer on the city streets.

He died in 1966 and was buried in the Blaine Twp. Cemetery.

            Ada (shown right) and Roy were living in Blaine Township, Benzie Co., MI, in 1930. Roy worked as a salesman at a general store – probably at the store at Putney Corners.

            Harry James Putney [Lester, Phoebe, Roswell], b. March 26, 1898, a child of Lester King Putney and Julia A. Smith; m. (1) Beatrice Ruby McColman; m. (2) Hazel D. Reed; m. (3) Gertrude Farnsworth; m. (4) Lumley; d. December, 1969, Onekama, MI

            Harry lived with his brother, Rufus Putney, at Putney Corners in 1930. Harry and Beatrice were married during the Great Depression, after the 1930 census was taken.

            Beatrice was born in 1911.

            Harry and Beatrice’s son Sidney died of spinal meningitis on January 3, 1936, at the age of two.

Beatrice died in 1937.

            Harriet Jesse Putney [Lester, Phoebe, Roswell], b. March 26, 1898, Blaine, Benzie Co., MI, a child of Lester King Putney and Julia A. Smith; m. Julius F. Zilch, December 15, 1920; d. June 10, 1987, Michigan; Blaine Twp. Cemetery, Blaine, Benzie Co., MI.

            Julius was born in Indiana on October 21, 1891.

During World War I, Julius enlisted in the 339th Infantry, Company M.

The 1930 census shows Julius and Harriet in Blaine Township, Benzei County. A 62-year old lodger, John Stapleton, lived in their home. Stapleton worked for one of the local fruit farms – probably for Harriet’s father or one of her uncles.

Julius died May 30, 1965.

Harriet was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Arcadia.

Harriet died on June 10, 1987 at her home at Putney Corners.

            Lyle L. Putney [Wesley, Phoebe, Roswell], b. March 1886, a child of Wesley R. Putney and Nettie V. Boss; m. Elsie M. Gavigan, April 10, 1910, Blaine, Benzie Co., MI; d. 1951.

            Elsie was born in Michigan in June, 1888, a daughter of Micah “Mike” and Elsie A. Gavigan.

            Lyle and Elsie lived a few miles south of Putney Corners in Arcadia, Manistee County, Michigan. In 1930, they were shown renting a home there for $10 a month. Lyle was a US Mail carrier.

            Elsie died in 1970 and was buried next to Lyle.

            Carrie was born in 1904, a daughter of James and Matilda Fenwick of Arcadia. Both were born in Canada.

            The only Garold Putney in the 1930 census that matches our description was a Gerald Putney with wife “Clara” in Grand Rapids, married about 1928. Clara was born in Michigan around 1904. Her mother and father were said to be born in Denmark and Canada, respectively. Gerald was unemployed at the start of the Great Depression. We’re not sure if this was our Garold or not.

            Carrie died in 1968 and was buried next to Garold.

            Gladys Putney [Victor, Phoebe, Roswell], b. June 20, 1894, Blaine, Benzie Co., MI, a child of Victor L. Putney and Sybella L. Gemmell; m. James Benjamin Evans, July 2, 1914, Blaine, Benzie Co., MI; d. after 1930

             James was born in February 1887, in Nebraska. The photo below is of (L-R) James Evans, Gladys Putney?, Joe Smeltzer and Minnie Heath.

 

            James and Gladys were shown in the 1930 census in Joyfield Township, Benzie County, with six children, listed between Daniel and Cecile Lathwell and Irvin and Florence Livingston. James was a general farmer. Another neighbor was the home of Ralph and Helen Haugen, whose two daughters, Eleanor and Arlene would someday marry two of the Evans’ boys – Kenneth and Sidney.

            Smeltzer’s farm grew to become one of the chief orchards in the Putney Corners region. It has employed hundreds of young men over the past 80 years, including Marion “Mike” Henry (shown right), who married Kitty Belle Hull, daughter of Kity Etoli (Sawyer) Hull.

Maude M. Putney [Victor, Phoebe, Roswell], b. around 1896; m. Mauritz Dahlgren; d. August, 1986.

            Maude didn’t marry until after 1930. She lived her childhood and young adult life with her parents and was constantly surrounded by family members at Putney Corners. Late in life, she married Mauritz Dahlgren.

            Mauritz was born in Michigan around 1883, a son of Swedish immigrants. He had been married previously. “Mauritz” and his first wife, Eva M., were shown in Frankfort in the 1920 census with their son, Paul M. Dahlgren. Paul was four years, eight months old. In 1930, Mauritz and Eva owned a $6,000 home on Leelanau Street, Block 20, in Frankfort. Mauritz was an engineer on the car ferry. Their son, Paul, was said to be a son of a mother and father born in Ohio and Michigan respectively, even though Eva claimed to be born in Indiana.

            Mauritz’s wife, Eva May, died in 1951 and was buried in the Gilmore Township Cemetery.

            Maude devoted a large portion of her free time to compiling family trees. In 1967, she published A History of the Blaine Christian Church and Putney Corners, a book devoted to telling the story of the Putney family and those Powers that came with them to Benzie County.

            Mauritz died in 1952.

            Maude died in August, 1986.

            No children.


             Alice Putney [Victor, Phoebe, Roswell], b. 1899, MI, a daughter of Victor Putney; m. Theodore Lindgren, around 1920, MI; d. July 8, 1988; Joyfield Township Cemetery.

            When she was 22 years old, Alice married Theodore Lindgren.

Theodore was born in Michigan in 1893, a son of Gust Lindgren.

Alice and Theodore lived in Flint, Michigan, where Theodore worked as a trimmer and setter at an automobile factory. By 1930, though, the two were back in Benzie County, living in Joyfield Township with two sons, Theodore’s father and his nephew, Gerald Lindgren. Theodore was a farmer.

Theodore died on October 14, 1992 and was buried next to Alice in the Joyfield Township Cemetery.

            Iris F. Putney [Victor, Phoebe, Roswell], b. September 4, 1904, MI, a daughter of Victor Putney and Sybella Gemmell; m. Leo McCarty; d. January 19, 1980; Joyfield Township Cemetery.

            Iris may have been the “roomer” listed in the 1930 census in Lansing. She was the same age and had the same birthplace as our Iris. She was working as a schoolteacher. Two of her colleagues lived near her: Eueda Sager and Margaret Schroder, also schoolteachers. The only inconsistency was her parents’ place of birth: Pennsylvania (father) and Canada (mother). Also in Lansing at the time was V. Leo MacCarthy, a roomer in the home of Russell and Ruth Webb on Woodlawn Avenue. Leo worked in Lansing as a barber. 

               Leo McCarty was born in Iowa on May 17, 1894. During World War I, he served as a private in the US 3rd Field Artillery, Battery D.

Iris was a teacher in Lansing Public Schools until 1965, when she retired and moved to Frankfort, Benzie County.

Leo died in Frankfort on December 8, 1969.

Iris became a member of the United Methodist Church in Frankfort, where she worked as a church secretary. She was also a member of the PEO, the Retired Teachers Association, the Benzie County Historical Society and the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She lived at 5370 Gorivan Road in Frankfort.

Iris died on January 19, 1980 and was buried next to Leo in the Joyfield Township Cemetery. She was survived by three sisters.

            No children.


            Sybella Ruth Putney [Victor, Phoebe, Roswell], b. 1909; m. Owen Smeltzer ; d. May 9, 1993; Joyfield Township Cemetery.

            Owen was born in Michigan on January 14, 1905, a son of William and Amy Smeltzer.

            Owen died in Flint in April 1969

            Ruth died on May 9, 1993. She was buried in the Joyfield Township Cemetery, next to Owen.

             Wesley S. Spoor [Martha, Charles, Roswell], b. June, 1865, Hart, Oceana Co., MI, a son of Mrs. Martha S. (Powers) Spoor.

            When he was still a young boy, his mother remarried to Erwin A. Fuller in Hart, Oceana Co., Michigan. They lived in Hart for a few years, then moved to Springfield Township, Kalkaska Co., MI, by 1880.

            The 1900 census shows Martha living on Bond Street in Kenosha Wisconsin. She was a restaurant keeper, and her son Wesley was a cook there. Martha’s parents lived with her. Martha claimed to be the mother of only three living children. Her son, Henry Spoor, lived nearby with his family.

            By 1910, Wesley’s mother had moved to Benton Township, Lake Co., IL, where she was the proprietor of a business.

            Wesley moved to Washington State, where he worked as a woodsman for a lumber camp until well into his 60’s (1930 census, Spokane, WA).

             Henry Grant Spoor [Martha, Charles, Roswell], b. August, 1867, Hart, Oceana Co., MI, a son of John L. Spoor and Martha Sarah Powers; m. Mary Idabelle Savage, May  7, 1890, MI; d. after 1920,

            When he was still a young boy, his mother remarried to Erwin A. Fuller in Hart, Oceana Co., Michigan. They lived in Hart for a few years, then moved to Springfield Township, Kalkaska Co., MI, by 1880.

            When he was about 22 years old (1890), Henry married Ida Savage, sister of Elmer Savage.

            Ida was born in Ohio in May, 1870.

            The 1900 census shows Henry and Ida in Kenosha, Wisconsin, near his mother and brother, Wesley. They had two children and Ida’s brother in the home.

            Henry and Ida stayed in Kenosha, while his mother moved to Illinois. Henry’s sons, Glenn and Leo, graduated from the Durkee School Class of 1906 of Kenosha. In 1920, Henry was shown in Kenosha with his wife, Ida, and no sons in the home. Henry worked as a janitor for a bed factory. His son, Leo, was living nearby with his wife and daughter.

            The 1930 census shows Henry living on Twelfth Street in Kenosha. He was a widower, working as a painting contractor.

            Leon G. Powers [Orange, Charles, Roswell], b. May 12, 1876, Hart, Oceana Co., MI, a son of Orange and Clara T. (Matthews) Powers; d. July 18, 1940, Monterey Co, CA

            Leon was living in Merced County, California, in the 1910 census. He was working as a wood chopper and living in the home of Benjamin and Martha Newton. He was single. Leon has not yet been found in the 1920 census.

            Leon died in Monterey County, California, on July 18, 1940.


            Lena Powers [Orange, Charles, Roswell], b. May, 1880, Springfield, MO, a daughter of Orange and Clara Powers; m. ___ Newland, between 1900-1910, New Orleans, LA;

            Lena’s husband died before 1910, leaving her without children. The 1910 census shows Lena as a widow in New Orleans. Her mother and brother, Godfrey, were living with her on Lafayette Street. They owned a boarding house. Seven other boarders were living there, too: William and Leila Miller, Christine Jones (servant), Winfred B. and Minnie Stitch and James and Maude Cooper.


            Godfrey Powers [Orange, Charles, Roswell], b. November, 1892, AL, a son of Orange and Clara Powers; m. __ before 1920; divorced before 1920.

            Godfrey lived in his mother’s boarding house in New Orleans until after 1910. The census in 1910 shows Godfrey working as a house carpenter. His brother, Leon, had moved to California and worked there as a wood chopper. By 1920, Godfrey had also moved to the west coast. He was shown in the census that year in Seattle, Washington. He was divorced and living in the home of Ralph and Phebe Woodward on Kilbourne Street. He was working as a lather for “housework” (probably for house carpentry).


            Lindsey Waldo Powers [William, Ephraim, Roswell] b. June, 1873, Ferry Township, Oceana Co., Michigan, a son of William W. Powers and Emma E. McNutt of Ferry Township, Oceana County, Michigan; m. Elma Jane Williams, May 20, 1894, Hart, MI; d. May 18, 1950, Muskegon Heights, MI; South Ferry Cemetery.

            Lindsey was a farmer and a miller at the Powers mill in Ferry.

            When he was 19-years old, he married 17-year old Emma J. Williams in a ceremony performed by Wesleyan Methodist Rev. D. E. Wade in Hart.

            Elma was born near Grass Lake, Michigan, on January 5, 1877, a daughter of Lemuel and Roseltha (Hall) Williams.

            In 1900, Lindsey and Elma were living in Ferry Township with their daughter, "Larene" (1) and Elma's sister, Pearl Williams (12). In 1910, Lindsey and Elma were in Ferry Township with six children.

            In 1920, Lindsey and Elma were still in Ferry Township with children "Ether M." (18), Dale E. (16), Emma R. (15), Hall D. (13), Laverne (11). In 1930, they were in Ferry with their son, Densmore (22) and a lodger, Floyd Joslin (32, b. MI). They were living n ext to Dale Powers (27) and his wife, Letha.

            Lindsey and Elma were active in the Wesleyan Methodist Church.

            Elma died at Ann Arbor, MI, of Cardiac Failure on April 20, 1946 She was buried in the South Ferry Cemetery.

            May E. Powers [William, Ephraim, Roswell], b. February, 1877, a daughter of William W. Powers and Emma McNutt; m. James Erving Weyant, Jr., July 25, 1897, Ferry, Oceana Co., MI;

            When she was 20 years old, May married 23-year old James E. Weyant Jr. in a ceremony in Ferry performed by Rev. James A. Weyant.

            James was a schoolteacher, born in July, 1874, a son of James and Phebe Weyant.

            James E. and “Mae” E. Weyant were living on North Hannah’s in Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan, in 1900. James was a college student. 

            We don’t know what happened to the Weyant’s from 1900 to 1930.

In 1930, May was living with her parents in Oceana County. Her children were living nearby in family members’ homes.
