The Whaleys a sketch by SM Whaley

(Written abt.1900) ( The following historical paper was read at last week's reunion of the Whaley family. By request it is here published for the interest of the many relatives and those who are socially identified with this family)

John Whaley was born in Essex Vermont, April 15, 1798. He came to Cayuga county , New York, about the year 1807 or 1808. He was a carpenter and worked at that trade. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, between Great Britain and the United States, and was taken prisoner and escaped about three months later. At the close of the war he was discharged from the service, and got a land warrant from the United States for 160 acres of land.

He was married twice: his first wife was Samantha Chester, daughter of Judge Chester, of Cayuga county, New York. They had four children - Laura, Samantha, John C. and Isabel Whaley. Laura Whaley married James Welch. They had three children - Hope Welch, Julia S. Welch, and John Welch. Julia S. Welch married Dr. Todd and they have four children and four grandchildren.. John Welch is the father of two daughters and had ten grandchildren. Samantha Whaley married Leonard Richard and they had four children.

John C. Whaley was born October 19, 1813. His first wife was Sarah Baker. They had eight children, as follows: Angeline Whaley was born August 28 1834. She married a man named Stuart. They had two children and three grandchildren. Alphonse Whaley was born April 21 1836. He had five children and six grandchildren. Mary Ann Whaley was born 21 November 1837. She married Albert Gilbert. They had four children and eight grandchildren. William W. Whaley was born November 2, 1839. He married a Miss Kimes. They have four children and two grandchildren. Charles H. Whaley was born June 23, 1841. Franklin Whaley was born April 21, 1843. Laura Samantha Whaley was born March 7, 1845, and married Jonas Henry. They had two children Francis Whaley was born December 17, 1847. He married Miss Harriet Whitman, They have two daughters. John C. Whaley's second wife was Abiah Welch. there were two children by this union - John C. Whaley JR. , born October 15, 1849 and Sarah A. Whaley, born April 23, 1859. Isabel Whaley Married a man from Canada and went there to reside. She lived only about three years after her marriage. This includes John Whaley's descendents by his first wife as far as I know.

John Whaley's second wife was Matilda Collins, born in New York September 19, 1799. There were 14 children by this marriage. One died in childhood and thirteen grew to manhood and womanhood. These are as follows: Cyrenus Whaley was born October 31 1816 in Cayuga county, New York. He married Miss Sally Gorham and they had seven Children, four of whom are living - S. M. Whaley, Mrs. Helen Hayward, Philetus S. Whaley, and Mrs Eska Weatherby. Otis Whaley was Born March 18, 1819. He married Caroline Watters and they had three children - George, Charles and Amine Whaley. Otis had a second wife. Philetus Whaley was born September 3, 1820. He married Miss Elizabeth Leacock and they had three children - Eugene, Rhoda and Aida Whaley. Prussia Whaley was born November 7, 1823. She married Henry G. Allen and they had five children, three of whom are living; Mrs. Eliza Smith, Charles B. Allen and John Allen. Warren Whaley was born April 6, 1825. He married a Miss Manley. They had two children - a son and a daughter. warren had a second wife. James Whaley was born January 10, 1827. He married Miss Silvernail. They had five children, four of whom are living - William Whaley, Mrs. Lavinia Lumnsdun, Mrs. Irene Robinson, and Mrs. Eva Tibbitts. Wallace Whaley was born September 19, 1822. He was married three times. His first wife was Miss Evaline B. Chase. They had one child. His second wife was Miss Sarah Mull. They had three children. I do not know their names. His third wife was Miss Miranda Hill. They had four children;- Mrs. Louis Wagner, Will Whaley, Clare Whaley, Clark Whaley. Warner Whaley was born June 20 1831. He married Miss Matilda Woodard. They had three children -Odeil Whaley, Mrs. Eliza Negus, Lewis Whaley. Jerome Whaley was born April 17, 1833 and married Miss Eliza Neff. They had one child. Mary Whaley was born January 3, 1835. She married David Fink and did not have any children. Eliza Whaley was born July 15, 1836. She married Cyrus Downer. They had one child, Mrs. Viola Gardner. Jane Whaley was born may 11, 1838. She married Seymour Packer, they had three children; two are living - Lucene and Eugene Whaley. Lucene Whaley's was born October 8 1840. He had two wives. There are four children by the first wife and three are living - Delos Whaley, Marvin Whaley, Newton Whaley. One child by his second wife. This includes the sons and daughters and grandchildren of John Whaley. His Eighteen children were all born in Cayuga and Onondaga counties, New York. there are but three now living out of this large family - Mrs. Prussia Allen of Seneca, ; Mrs. Jane Packer of Watertown, S.D.; and James Whaley of Elbridge, N.Y.

John Whaley came to Fulton county Ohio in 1840 with his family and lived in the township of Gorham until 1852, when he died at the age of 63 years. He was a descendant of Edward Whaley, the regicide and Edward Whaley is the descendent of Wymaosus Whaley, who came with William the Conqueror to Great Britain 1066 and was made a lord for his bravery. John Whaley's descendants number about 400 at the present time.
