Henspeter is of German origin, possibly in Mecklenburg. Malte Hinzpeter of Stuttgart, Germany believes the name derives from the first name of Hinz (Heinz in northern German), which is short for Heinrich and that the first Hinzpeter was probably “Peter son of Hinz” or Hinzpeter. There was a Georg Ernst Hinzpeter who was the tutor to William the 2nd of Prussia about 1865. The name has been located in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg, Posen, Rhineland and Westphalia in Germany. There the name is spelled Hinzpeter, Hintzpeter, Heinspeter or Hinspeter.

The Henspeter name in America 1850-
In his book The Germans of Chicago Rudolph A. Hofmeister states that "In the wake of the unsuccessful Revolution of 1848, innumerable outstanding men came to the new world with the first high tide of German immigration that brought 502,873 Germans between 1852 and 1854."
In volume one of Germans to America: lists of passengers arriving at U. S. ports on page 169 there is an entry for Hinspeter, Heinrick (Henry). It says he was 19 years of age and had sailed from Hamburgh, Germany to New York on 05 Jul 1850 aboard the ship “Guttenburg”. It also has his province and village of origin coded. There is a problem with this code though. The province is coded MK for Mecklenburg and the village is coded 0B6. There is not a village code by this designation. If the code were 006 it would be Oberlangenstadt, if it were 036 it would be Ohio, and if it were B06 it would have been Borkum. I believe this is a "typo" and probably was meant to read B06? There is also no designation for a village code of 086. Henry would have been born about 1831.
Carl Henspeter who was 32 years of age and was a smith by occupation arrived in New York on 03 Oct 1853 aboard the ship "Louisiana" which had sailed from Hamburg, Germany. His province of origin is listed as Mecklenburg but no village was listed.
Johann Hinzpeter who was 23 years of age, his wife Auguste who was 20 years of age and their daughter Sophie arrived in New York on 07 Sep 1855 aboard the ship "Eldia" which had sailed from Hamburg, Germany. Their village of origin is not listed and they were recorded as being from the province of Prussia.
F. H. C. Hinzpeter who was 42 years of age and was a carpenter by occupation, his wife Maria who was 40 years of age, along with their daughter Line who was 10 years of age and their son Heinrich who was 7 years of age arrived in New York on 07 June 1866 aboard the ship "Palmerston" which had sailed from Hamburg, Germany. Their province of origin is listed as Germany and their destination is recorded as Illinois. No village of origin was recorded. The name Linnie (Line/Lena) was also used by the Charles Hinzpeter family that was in Chicago in 1870 as well as the families of Shiawassee County, Michigan. It is probable that these three groups are related as Linnie is an unusual name.
Johann Hinzpeter who was 36 years of age and was a farmer by occupation, his wife Friederike who was 22 years of age along with their son Heinrich who was 7 years of age and their daughter Dorothea who was 6 years of age arrived in New York on 24 May 1869 aboard the ship "Reichstag" which had sailed from Hamburg, Germany. Their province of origin is listed as Germany and no village was coded.
Maria Hinspeter who was 20 years of age and single arrived in New York on 15 Jun 1872 aboard the ship "Allemannia". Her province of origin is listed as Germany and no village was recorded.
The 1860 census index for Will County, Illinois includes:
Henspeter, Henry who was 29 years of age and was born in Mecklenburg, his wife Dorothy who was 26 years of age and also born in Mecklenburg, their children Rosa who was 7 years of age and Louis who was 5 years of age. Both children were listed as being born in Illinois. Also listed is a Christian Henspeter who was 14 years of age. Christian is listed as being born in Illinois? Also living with them was Christian Sufried who was 54 years of age and was a weaver who was born in Mecklenburg. They were living in Frankfort Township of Will County. Christian is probably a brother or nephew? This Henry was born about 1831 and Christian would have been born about 1846. If Christian was actually born in Illinois this would indicate a Henspeter in Illinois prior to 1850. This Henry is believed to be the same as Heinrick Hinspeter who arrived in New York on 05 Jul 1850.
Henry Henspeter located in Pennsylvania after his arrival in the U.S.. He remained there about six months and then moved to Illinois where he engaged in farming. About 1855 he made the long trip, with ox teams to California and engaged in gold mining for about three years. He returned to Illinois, via the Isthmus of Panama and he bought eighty acres of land in Cook (Will?) County. He married and remained on that farm until about 1870 when they went to Indiana where he was engaged in the sawmill and lumber business for a while. His wife was Dorothy Herbst who was born in Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany. Their children were: Rose, Louis, Henry C., Ann, August, Beanny, Emma, Fred E., Frank, and Caroline. In 1871 they went to San Francisco on one of the first through trains and from there by boat to Puget Sound, Washington. They settled in Whatcom County, Washington where he can be found in the 1880 census.
The 1870 census of Chicago, Illinois, in ward 16 includes:
Heinspeter, Charles, who was a carpenter, he was 47 years of age and was born in Prussia, his wife Sophia who was 41 years of age and was also born in Prussia, Their children Dora who was 17 years of age who was born in Prussia, Linnie 15 years of age and Henry 13 years of age. Linnie and Henry were born in Illinois. This family would have immigrated between 1853 and 1855. Charles would have been born about 1823. This may have been the Carl Henspeter who arrived in New york in 1853 aboard the
“Louisiana”. He is possibly a brother to Henry Henspeter.
The 1870 census for Will County, Illinois includes:
Heinspeter, Christian who was 23 years of age as living with the Conrad and Maria Buchmeyer family in Monee in Will County. This is most likely the same Christian Henspeter who was living with Henry Henspeter in 1860. This Christian was born about 1846.

All these children were born in Mecklenburg. They were living in Green Garden in Will County. This family would have immigrated after 1862. Frederick would have been born about 1820. He is probably a brother to Henry Henspeter of Will County. Maria Hinspeter maybe the one that married Peter Knepper on 22 Sep 1870 in Will County.
Hinspeter, Mary who was 36 years of age was living with the Joachim and Maria Jarchof family in Green Garden. Mary would have been born about 1834. She may have been a sister to Fredrick and Henry Henspeter. Mary Henspeter may be the one that married Christian Frohboese on 14 Jul 1871 in Will County.

Bertha's maiden name was Stockfish and they were married 07 Mar 1878 in Will County. This Frederick would have been born about 1854. This may be the son of Frederick and Dorothea Hinspeter above.

Fred Hinspeter was naturalized in the Joliet, Illinois Will County Courts on 19 Feb 1897. It says he was from Germany and the witnesses were August Wishover and Christ Kohlhagen. It is recorded in Volume 7 page 556.
John Hinspeter was naturalized in the Dane County, Wisconsin Circuit Court on 16 Dec 1859. It says he was born in Prussia and the witnesses were Charles Baker and Frederick Kohr. It is recorded in A8-148.

This is possibly Ferdinand Eduard Hintzpeter b. 11 Sep 1831, the son of Johann and Caroline (Hensel) Hinzpeter of Posen, Prussia about 1830.

It is believe these Christians and Christopher are actually Christoph Christian Joseph Heinzpeter as he listed being a “teamster” and that he resided in “Chicago” on his marriage license in 1877 and his death record in 1889 stated he was an “stationary engineer”.
In order to locate these individuals in the 1880 census of Chicago you have to convert the address to a modern day address, look it up on a city map and use the corresponding number to locate the enumeration district they lived in. 312 N. May is today 802 N. May and is in enumeration districts 141 or 147. 14 McReynolds is today 1617 LeMoyne and is in enumeration district 149. These three enumeration districts were searched and no one by the Henspeter name was found. This coupled with the lack of soundex information indicates Christoph and Alvina Henspeter were not in Chigago from 1879 through 1880?

On 02 Jun 1900 he married Eugenia E. Dyer of Chicago. Their children were: Edward C., Ervin H. and Herman C. Jr.. He began as an office boy on 01 May 1889 with the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. In 1906 he was promoted to branch manager in Chicago and in 1909 to associate manager. This listing was in a who’s who of Chicago.

Charles is listed as a farmer. This is the Charles/John and Henrietta Henspeter who appear later in Shiawassee County, Michigan in 1870. Also listed with this family is Mary Slayde who is 68 years of age and was born in Prussia, Germany. This probably was not Henrietta's mother as Henrietta's maidne name is recorded as Bigole unless she had remarried? It could also have been Charles's mother if she had remarried? Mary Slayde's relationship was not recorded.

Their children, Henrietta 9 years of age, Henry 7 years of age, Julia 5 years of age, Sophia 2 years of age and Lydia 4 months old. Note names Henry and Sophia also in common with the Charles Hinspeter Chicago family.
The 1870 census of Owosso, Shiawassee County, Michigan includes:
Elizabeth Hanspeter who was 14 years of age and was house-help in the Samuel Lamfren family. Samuel was a clothing merchant who was born in Wurtemburg, Germany.
According to a history of Shiawassee County, in 1875 the Emmanuel Church of The Evangelical Association of Bennington was built. Among the “corporators” in 1876 there was a Frederick “Hinspader”. This name is believed to be Henspeter.
The 1875 Plat Map of Bennington Township lists in section five: M. Henspeter 40 acres and C. Henspeter 40 acres. M. is probably Mary, Frank’s wife and C. is probably Charles?

Her children were Etta 19 years of age, Henry 17 years of age, Julia 15 years of age, Sophia 12 years of age and Letta who was 10 years of age. The way these children are recorded they appear to be from two different families. They are not listed by age which is the ususal process. This is thought to be the same person as Frank in the 1870 census.

03 Dec 1884 Mina "Hamepeter" (Hanspeter) married Harou W. Belhumer. She was born in "Detroit" and he was born in Pennsylvania. Mina (Minnie) was the daughter of Frank and Mary Hanspeter. She would have been born about 1859?
19 Aug 1891 in Bennington, Henry Henspeter married Estella Watkins. He was 28 years of age and she was 26. They were both from Bennington and were both born in Michigan. Henry's father was Charles Hinspeter and his mother was Etta Bigole. Stella's father was Albert Watkins and her mother's name was not recorded. Henry would have been born in 1863. Their witnesses were Steven Watkins and Sophia Hinspeter (his ister) who were both from Bennington. In the 1870 census Henry's father is listed as John Hanspeter, possilby John Charles Hanspeter?

14 May 1908 Helen Henspeter three and one half day old daughter of Henry and Estella Henspeter diedin Bennington.

After analysis of names that occur in both the Michigan and Illinois Henspeter familes, Frank/Franz, Charles/Carl, Henry/Heinrich, Fred/Friederich, Dorothea/Doris, Sophia, Christoph, John/Johann, Mina/Minnie, William/Wilhelm and comparison with families in Mecklenburg about 1800 one famliy has a large combination of these same names and similar dates. That family is: Johann Nicholaus Friederich Hintzpeter and his wife Friederick Sophia Margareta Jaeger of Gnoien, Mecklenburg. I feel this is the highest probability of a match. It is probable their son Heinrich Conrad Johann Hintzpeter was the Henry Hinspeter who immigrated in 1850. It is probable their son Carl Christoph Nicholaus Hintzpeter was the father of Christoph C. J. Hinzpeter and probable he was the Charles Hinspeter of Chicago in the 1870's. It is probable their son Franz Johann Wilhelm Hintzpeter was the Frank Hanspeter of Shiawassee County, Michigan in 1870. It is probable that Adolph Heinrich Freiderich Hintzpeter was the Frederick Hinspeter in Shiawassee County, Michigan in 1870. There appears a naming connection between the Illinois and Michigan families. There is also a connection to carpentery and lumbering and railroading. There is also a connection to Indiana and saw mills there. The Mina (Minnie) Hanspeter of Shiawassee County in 1884 could have been named for their sister Mina Maria Luisa Hintzpeter. They may have had an earlier son Johann Carl /Charles Hintzpeter about 1825 who could be the John or Charles Hinspeter of Shiawassee County, Michigan in 1870. These are of course suppositions but seem to be a real possibility.

Alvina was born 09 Jan 1861 in Sellin in the District of Rummelsburg Pommern. Pommern also known as Pomerania came under Prussian control in 1815.
Liber “E” of the Berrien County Michigan Marriage Records lists the marriage of Christoph C. J. Hinzpeter and Alovine Laura Fordell (Zordel) on page 300. Christoph was 25 years of age and Alovina was 17 years of age. They were married in St. Joseph, Michigan on 28 Dec 1877. Christoph was recorded as living in Chicago, Illinois. Alovine was recorded as living in St. Joseph. The record says Christoph was a "teamster" and Alovine as being "at home". This record also states that Christoph Hinzpeter was born in Mecklenberg (Germany) and Alovine Zordell was born in Pommern (Pomerania, Germany). The marriage was performed by Ed Ch Georgii. Their witnesses were Frederick Westfal of St. Joseph and John Rosirtzki also of St. Joseph. The marriage was recorded on 31 Dec 1877.
Note: In the St. Joseph cemetery next to Alvina Dombrowsky's grave there is a large stone that reads "Mother Hulda Westphall". It is possible that this Frederick Westfal was Alvina's brother-in-law. A Federick Westpahl married Hulda Zordel in 1875 and was 35 years old at that time. He would have been 20 years old in 1860 the year Alvina was born. Alvina’s parents are believed to have died by this time as no record has been found of them in Berrien County. There are grave markers for John and Caroline Zordel in the Lakeview Cemetery in St. Joseph, Michigan.

Christoph Henspeter died on 02 Oct 1889 in Chicago, Illinois. His death certificate states: He was 36 years of age at the time of his death, he died a 7 o’clock P.M. on October 2, 1889. His occupation was “Stationary Engineer”. His nationality was German and he was born in Germany. He had been a resident of Illinois for 12 years. His death occurred at 115 Samuel Street in the 16th ward of Chicago. He was married at the time of his death. He died from complications of Typhoid Fever. His Burial place is listed as Waldheiem (Cemetery). This certificate was filed on 04 Oct 1889. This certificate also spells his name “Christian Hinspeter”. In most records I have seen he was called Christ and it is probable that the Dr. extended that into Christian rather than Christoph although his second name was Christian and maybe he was known by that name.
The cemetery records for Waldheim Cemetery were searched and lists: # 11374 date of interment, 05 Oct 1889, Christian Hinspeter, of 115 Samuel Street, 36 years of age, born in Germany, died 02 Oct 1889, of Typhoid Fever, location of the grave is C 446, surviving relative Mrs. Hinspeter, of 113? Samuel Street, physician Reynolds, undertaker Klamer, remarks $ 4.00 Gon 2.50. The letters Gon are not very legible and may be something else? Note: His death notice was carried in the Chicago Times and the Chicago Daily News. The listing in the Chicago Daily News under "Deaths" reads, Hinspeter-Christian Hinspeter 36 115 Samuel. These entries were normally one liners.
After his death Alvina Henspeter returned to Berrien County and remarried: Adolph Dombrowsky on 27 Jan 1893. Adolph Dombrowsky was born in Garzigar in the District of Lauenburg, Pommern on 29 Apr 1841and died in St. Joseph, Michigan on 23 Jul 1929. Alvina died 25 Feb 1927 in St. Joseph, Michigan. She and Adolph are buried in the St. Joseph City Cemetery (Lakeview). Their children were:

She was 67 years, 1 month and 14 days old at the time of her death. This would make her birth date 11 Jan 1860 according to this record. The record says she was born in Germany and that her father's name was John Yordell. Her mother's name was not listed.

The Plat Maps of Berrien County for 1929 shows F. L. Henspeter on Elm Valley Road east of Cleveland Avenue and east of Gardner Road but west of Boyle Lake Road. The property was on the north side of Elm Valley Road.
Liber “K” of the Berrien County Marriage Records lists the marriage of William Hinspeter and Barbara Beldin on page 333. William was 26 years of age and Barbara was 22 years of age. His father was listed as Christ and his mother's maiden name was recorded as Zordel. William Hinspeter was the oldest son of Christoph and Alvina Henspeter.
Liber “L” of the Berrien County Marriage Records lists the marriage of Charles H. Henspeter and Ruth Snodgrass on page 216. Charles was 34 years of age and Ruth was 24 years old. They were married in Niles, Michigan on 30 Dec 1914. The record says he was born in Illinois and she was born in Michigan. They were both listed as living in Niles at this time. His father is listed as Chris and his mother's maiden name was recorded as Zordell. Her father was listed as Henry and her mother's maiden name was recorded as Esper. Charles was listed as a "motion picture operator" and she was listed as "at home". Charles was the second oldest son of Christoph and Alvina Henspeter. Charles Henspeter is listed as a contractor.
Charles and Ruth Henspeter apparently lived in Niles until around 1918. The 1918 Benton Harbor City Directory lists them as living at 941 Pavone Street. Charles and Ruth are reportedly working at Patricks, a dry good store, at 136 Pipestone Street. In 1920 Charles and Ruth had moved to 957 Lavette Avenue in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
In 1922 Charles and Ruth have moved to 818 Harrison in St. Joseph, one block from his mother's home (Alovina Dombrowsky) at 914 Harrison. Also listed in the 1922 St. Joseph directory is a Henspeter Electric Shop and Charles is the proprietor. They sold electrical appliances, wiring, washing machines, irons, vacuum cleaners, etc. The business is at 418 State Street in St. Joseph. There are not children noted. After his wifes death on 02 Jan 1940 he moved to Panoma (Pamona?), California. Ruth (Snodgrass) Henspeter is buried in the Galien Township Cemetery in Galien, Michigan.
The 1915 St. Joseph City Directory lists Frederick L. Henspeter and his wife Clara as living at 811 Michigan Avenue where he had lived since 1913. He is listed as a foreman at Brown Ice and Coal Company. In the 1910 City Directory Clara Angolin was listed as being a domestic at 1621 Forres Avenue in St. Joseph. In 1918 Fred and Clara are still living at the same address and he still holds the same job. In 1920 Fred is listed in the Benton Harbor City Directory as working as a molder at the Benton Harbor Foundry Company. No address is given with this listing. This family later moved to a farm on Elm Valley Road in Weesaw Township of Berrien County just northeast of Galien, Michigan. Lillian Henspeter Hauch once told me that this family name used to be pronounced Angolina.
Clara Angolin's parents were Charles Angolin and Marie (Mary) Tohman. Both are recorded as having been born in Germany around 1860. They had four children, Marthia Angolin who married Max Yeske, Charles Angolin Junior, Herbert Angolin and Clara Angolin. Charles Jr. was born in Berlin, Germany on 29 Sep 1886.
Liber “I” of the Berrien County Marriage Records lists the marriage of Amos Carpenter and Alvina Hinspeter on page 282. They were married in St. Joseph, Michigan on 09 Jan 1906. He was a "farmer" from Weesaw Township of Berrien County and she was a "domestic" from St. Joseph, Michigan. He was 44 years old and she was 23 years old. This was his second and her first marriage. The record states that he was born in Michigan and she was born in Illinois. His father is listed as Marcus and his mother's maiden name was recorded as Lake. Her father is recorded as Christ and her mother's maiden name was recorded as Zerdell. Their witnesses were Fred Heinspeter of St. Joseph, Michigan and Amanda Kraft of New Troy, Michigan. This was the only daughter of Christoph and Alvina Henspeter.
None of these German families are listed in the 1892 Berrien County Directory. The 1912 St. Joseph City Directory lists Charles Angolin as a laborer and as boarding at 814 Hoyt Street. This was probably Charles Junior and this could have been the family address. By 1917-21 this family had moved to Weesaw Township north of Galien. Their son-in-law, Frederick Henspeter with his wife Clara (their daughter) and Herbert Henspeter moved to this same area. Some of the Angolins and Henspeters are buried in the Galien Cemetery.
Lillian Henspeter married John Hauch (II) of New Troy (Weesaw Township) Berrien County on December 21, 1934. They married in South Bend, Indiana. John is the son of John Hauch and Tillie Schlacht who were both reportedly born in Russia. John Hauch (I) was born about 1880 and Tillie was born in 1886. John and Lillian Hauch had eight children:
