According to the Dictionary of English surnames, the name of Surch/Search derives from the Old English name Saeric which means "Sea Ruler". In Middle English this turned into the name Saric, Seric or Sarc and Serc and gave rise to modern names such as Search, Sarch, Sarge, Serck and Sark. In the year 1066 (The Conquest), there were people of the name Siric, Syric and Seric. In 1206 there was a Hugo Serich or Hugo Sirich. In 1275 there was a Roger Syrik. Other names related to this name are Seawright, Serrick, Sarkes, Surrage and Surridge.

There was a John Search who married Mary Hodgkins on 07 Jun 1819 in Birmingham, Warwick County, England. There was a John Search who was born on 15 Jan 1834 in Walworth, Surrey County, England and his parents were John and Mary Search. This may be the family of John Surch of Berrien County, Michigan?

There was one male 30 to 40 years of age, one male 20 to 30 years of age and one male between 5 to 10 years of age. There was one female 20 to 30 years of age, two females between 5 and 10 years of age and one female who was less than five years of age.

Adam J. Surch married Paulina Rashke on 14 Jan 1893 in St. Joseph. Witnesses were: Albert Surch and Mrs. Emma Raske. According to this record Adam was 24 years of age and Paulina was 22 years of age. Adam was from Lincoln Township and Pauline was from Royalton Township. Adam's father was listed as *John Surch and his mother was listed as Esther J. Briney. *This conflicts with his death record but is the more likely of the two notations. Pauline's father was listed as August Raske and her mother's name was listed as "unknown". Pauline was born in Germany. Adam J. and Pauline (Raschke) Surch had children:

Adam Surch died as the result of a car/pedestrian accident in Buchanan on 09 Dec 1943. The Niles Daily Star article about this accident names Adam’s parents as Albert and Emma Surch?

August Raschke died on 02 Jul 1913 in Royalton Township. He was 83 years 3 months and 9 days of age at the time of his death. He would have been born 23 April 1830 in Germany. August Raschke owned land near William J. Surch in Royalton Township in 1903.

Harry Raymond Surch married Flossie Mae Conrad 0n 17 Apr 1927 in Buchanan. Witnesses were: George Gowland and Bessie Gowland. According to this record Harry was 24 years of age and Flossie was 20 years of age. Harry was from Berrien Springs and Flossie was from Buchanan. Ira Frank Conrad was the son of Franklin Amos Conrad. Franklin was born on 23 Mar 1852 in Berrien County, Michigan. On 25 Dec 1874 he married Abby Jane Fuller. Franklin Conrad died in Berrien County 18 Jan 1939. Abby Conrad died 10 Feb 1939.

From this record it would appear the Conrads were in Michigan as early as 1848.

Franklin Amos Conrad was the son of Andreas Conrad. Andreas Conrad was born 18 Nov 1809 in Waldrems, Wurttemburg, Germany. He married Fredericka Haegele, the daughter of Johann Jacob Haegele and Jacobina Laier in Waldrems on 30 Sep 1830. Andreas Conrad died 10 Jul 1868 in Buchanan, Michigan. Fredericka Conrad died 28 Nov 1875 also in Buchanan.

Andreas Conrad was the son of Johann Georg Conrad. Johann Georg Conrad was born 24 Jul 1773 in Unterweissach, Wurttemburg, Germany. Johann married Katharina Dorothea Specht, daughter of Johann Michael Specht and Dorothea Layer. Johann Georg Conrad died in Waldrems on 13 Aug 1828. Katharina Dorothea Conrad died on 12 Feb 1832 in Backnang, Wurttemburg, Germany.

Johann Georg Conrad was the son of Chistoph Friederich Conrad. Christoph Friederich Conrad was born 14 Aug 1743 in Unterweissach, Wurttemburg, Germany. Christoph married Christina Agnew Kuebler, daughter of Matthias Kuebler and Anna Maria Jung in Unterweissach, Wurttemburg, Germany. Christoph Friederich Conrad died 29 Jul 1799 in Unterweissach. Christina Agnew Conrad died 16 Jan 1801 in Unterweissach.

Christoph Friederich Conrad was the son of Samuel Conrad. Samuel Conrad was born 28 Nov 1696 in Grossaspach, Wurttemburg, Germany. Samuel married Maria Catherine Kuemmerle, daughter of Jacob Adam Kuemmerle and Anna Maria Whal, in Unterweissach, Wurttemburg, Germany on 12 Jun 1731. He married second Anna Maria Reiger. Samuel Conrad died 18 Dec 1766.

Michael Conrad was the son on Hans and Margaretha Conrad. In some records the name is spelled Conradt rather than Conrad.

According to this record Robert was 24 years of age and Joyce was 18 years of age. Robert's father was listed as Harry Surch and his mother was listed as Flossie Conrad. There was a Maud Ellis born 20 Apr 1883 in Jackson County, Michigan. Her birth was registered in Berrien County as her parents were from Buchanan. Her father was Dany M. Ellis who was born in Michigan and her mother was Nettie Ellis who was born in Illinois. This was the Maud Ellis who married Hugh Eckelbarger in 1903?

Family records indicate Maud’s parents were Dana and Nettie (Richmond) Ellis. Nettie Richmond was the daughter of Oscar F. and Mary (Foster)Richmond. Dana M. Ellis married Nettie Richmond on 27 Aug 1878 in Jonesville, Michigan. Dana Ellis was born 16 Jul 1857 in Lawrence, Michigan and died on 10 Oct 1932. Nettie (Richmond) Ellis was born 17 Dec 1866 and died on 19 Nov 1935 both are buried in the Riverview Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana.

Oscar F. Richmond served as a 1st Sgt. and later as 1st Lt. with Co. “I”, 81st Regiment of the Illinois Infantry During the Civil War. Oscar Richmond enrolled at Pulaski County, Illinois on the 9th of August 1862. He filed for an “Invalids Pension” on 5 Aug 1890 from Buchanan, Michigan. He claimed to have “Disease of the lungs and total deafness of the right ear”. His military records describe him as being six feet tall, of light complexion, with blue eyes and brown hair. His occupation before his service was as a railroad employee. These documents also state that he was born on 21 May 1836 in Lake County, Ohio. He was honorably discharged at Chicago, Illinois on 09 Aug 1865. Oscar F. Richmond was the son of William H. and Elsie M. (Evans) Richmond. William H. Richmond was the son of John and Nancy (Eddy) Richmond of Massachusetts.

According to the book Names of Early Settlers of Berks and Lebanon Counties, Pennsylvania under a section concerning Tulpehocken appears the name of George Eichelberger. He is listed as a settler there in 1743/46. The reference indicates: “the first settlers in Tulpehocken were Lutherans and German Reformed.” In the book Pennsylvania German Pioneers there is listed a Friederich Egelberger who arrived aboard the ship “Albany” in 1728. “The above is a true list of the masters of the Palatine Familys, imported in the ship Albany, from Rotterdam to Philadelphia.” Palatine was part of what was to become Germany. The relationship between George and Friederich has not been established.

There was a George Eikelberger who was appointed as sheriff of York County, Pennsylvania on 07 Oct 1768. According to the Pensylvania Archives there was a Hans Geo. Eichelberger who arrived in Pennsylvania “in the ship Hope, of London, Daniel Reed, Master, From Rotterdam”. These immigrants took the oath of allegiance on 28 August 1733.

Pearl Kathryn Eagley's parents were Ervin E. and Nina Pearl (Cobb) Eagley. Nina P. Eagley of 407 Portage Street in Buchanan died on 02 Oct 1960. She was born 06 Nov 1887 in Cedar Bluffs, Kansas and was the daughter of Gideon and Rosetta (Swander) Cobb. Nina Pearl Cobb married on 31 Dec 1905 in Churubusco Indiana, Ervin E. Eagley and moved to Buchanan in 1926. Nina P. Eagley was survived by her husband, a son Cleland Eagley of Niles and five daughters, Mrs. Vera Spencer of Bertrand Township, Mrs. Pearl Eckelbarger of Berrien Springs, Mrs. Vesta Heiermann of Niles, Mrs. LaVon Harter of Searcy, Arkansas and Mrs. Gloria Palmer of Niles. She had five brothers and four sisters who also survived her. She was buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan. Ervin E. and Nina P. (Cobb) Eagley had children:

The Eagley family is descended through Marcus and Elizabeth Egli. Marcus Egli was born about 1690 in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. The family came to America in 1743 and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. My thanks to Homer J. The book Pennsylvania German Pioneers includes a reference to “Marx Egli”. This is probably the Marcus Egli above. Marx Egli was being “sworn” at the courthouse in Philadelphia in August of 1747. “The Foreigners whose names are underwritten, imported in the Bilander Vernon, from Rotterdam & last from Leith in Scotland, Thomas Richs, Master, did this day take the foregoing Oaths to the Government.”
