Karl Hauch married Marie Tiefenbacker on 02 Oct 1859 in the Zitomir Parish of Volhynia, Russia.  The marriage was most likely in Friederichsdorf also known as Solomka.  The Tiefenbacker name is seen in the transcribed in Volhynia records as Diefenbacker, Tiefenbacker and Tiefenbach.  Marie is possibly the daughter of Michael and Wilhelmine (Höppner) Tiefenbach of Solomka.  According to a native German Tiefenbach is High German and Diefenbach is Low German and are the same name. The name means “deep stream” or perhaps “a stream that runs through a deep valley”.  They say Tiefenbacker means “from Tiefenbach”.  Perhaps this name originates from someone who lived near such a place.  There are no less than ten places named Tiefenbach in Germany according to http://www.mapquest.com/ Karl and Marie (Tiefenbacker) Hauch had at least five children and probably more: 1. Wilhelmine Christine Hauch b. 17 Dec 1863 in Solomka, Rowno Parish, Volhynia, Russia, she married John Gittersonke on 03 Oct 1885 in Zhiomir Parish, Volhynia, Russia and she died 20 Feb 1938 in Benton Harbor, Michigan. 2. Friederich Hauch b. 26 Mar 1869 in Solomka, Rowno Parish, Volhynia, Russia. 3. Rosina Anna Hauch b. 07 Nov 1871 in Solomka, Rowno Parish, Volhnia, Russia, she married Julius Fuhrman on 12 Feb 1894 and she died on 14 Nov 1952 in Benton Harbor, Michigan. 4. Wilhelm Julius Carl Hauch b. 25 Dec 1876 in Solomka, Rowno Parish, Volhynia, Russia and he died 15 May 1937 in Watervliet Township, Berrien County, Michigan. 5. Johann Martin Hauch b. 19 Apr 1880 in Solomka, Rowno Parish, Volhynia, Russia and he died on 02 August 1917 in Weesaw Township of Berrien County, Michigan. The Karl Hauch family left the area of Solomka in 1905 for America. Solomka was just north of Rovno in this parish of Tutschin, which was then in Russia but today is in the Ukraine. Karl is also seen in records as Carl. On April 14, 1905 the passenger ship S.S. Patricia sailed from Hamburg, Germany. The ship arrived in New York on April 28, 1905. On this ship were: Johann Hauch 25 years of age his wife Ottilie Hauch 19 years of age their son Wilhelm Hauch 2 months of age and   Carl Hauch 60 years of age (Johann's father) and his wife Marie Hauch 58 years of age They had left Solomka, Volhynia, Russia and were headed for Benton Harbor, Michigan. Solomka is 186 miles west of Kiev and just north of Rovno in present day Ukraine. It is listed as a minor village, too small to appear on world maps. Volhynia was a part of Russia that became part of the Ukraine. This area of Russia was once part of Poland and had been occupied by Russia since 1793. Germans had been invited to settle in Russia as early as 1780 by Catherine the Great. Catherine was German herself. She was born in Prussia. On the ship’s manifest, Johann (John) Hauch is listed as a laborer and so is Carl Hauch. The family story is that Carl Hauch did not like it here and stayed long enough to "buy a warm winter coat" and then returned to Germany. It is believed his wife, Marie (Tiefenbach) Hauch, must have returned also. Karl must have also earned enough for passage on the return train to New York and the ship back for himself and his wife. At this time Germans were fleeing Russia to avoid persecution and it is not likely that he went back to Volhynia. Catherine the Great had promised the German immigrants to Russia that they could retain their German language and ways. Later Czars began to require them to speak the Russian language and began making service in the military mandatory. The family story is that Johann's wife Ottilie had worked as a domestic for some Russian soldiers and would chase their dog around with a broom. The Russian soldiers could not figure out why the dog always wanted to go outside. Russia had a war going with Japan in 1904 and was not doing well so they began carting off the German men to fight. The story is that Ottilie had to cover Wilhelm's (William's) mouth as they escaped to prevent the Russians from hearing the baby cry. If caught by the Russians and even some Germans they would have been forced to return. The earliest Tiefenbach I have located in Berrien County, Michigan was a Ferdinand Tiefenbach. According to Eveline Tiefenbach, “Ferdinand Tiefenbach was born 25 Nov 1854 in Friedrichsdorf aka Salomka Krs. Rowno, Volhynia Russia, and died 14 Jul 1901 in Michigan, USA. He married Henrietta Klinger 04 Oct 1873 in Zhitomir, Volhynia, Russia, daughter of Gottlieb Klinger. Henrietta was born 27 Jun 1854 in Friedrichsdorf aka Salomka Krs. Rowno, Volhynia, Russia, and died 25 Jan 1933 in Bridgman, Berrien County, Michigan.” According to Eveline Tiefenbach their children were: “Katharina Tiefenbach, b. 27 Feb 1877; d. 24 Sep 1966. Wilhelm Ferdinand Tiefenbach, b. 08 Sep 1879, Marianka, Wohlynien - Russia; d. Dec 1969, Buchanan, Berrien, Michigan, USA. Anna Tiefenbach, b. 01 Sep 1881, Berestowiec, Kostopil, Rivne, Russian Empire (Ukraine); d. 05 Mai 1948, Berrien, Michigan, USA. Mathilda Tiefenbach, b. 11 Jul 1884, Marinanowka, Wohlynien - Russia; d. Feb 1985, Galien, Berrien, Michigan, USA. August Tiefenbach, b. 15 Jun 1889, Rowno, Wohlynien - Russia; d. 1949, Iowa, USA. Amile Tiefenbach, b. 03 Mai 1898, Rowno, Wohlynien, Russia; d. 22 Mrz 1916, Lake Berrien, Michigan.” On February 18, 1900 aboard the ship Munchen was: Henrietta Tiefenbach, age 45, from Rowno, Russia with children, August, age 9, Emile, age 2, Mathilde, age 15 and Wilhelm, age 20. They were headed for Benton Harbor, Michigan. They sailed from Bremen, Germany and were joining “F. Tiefenbach Berrien County”. Their port of arrival was Baltimore, Maryland. This record indicates that Henrietta was going to join her “husband” and the children were joining their “father”. This “F. Tiefenbach” was Ferdinand Tiefenbach. Eveline indicates that Michael Tiefenbach was the son of an unknown Tiefenbach who was from Baden, Württemberg, Germany. Christoph Tiefnebach was born in Baden and married Caroline Rode. Christpoh was a brother of Michael Tiefenbach, who was Marie (Tiefenbach) Hauch’s father. Christoph was also the father of the Ferdinand Tiefenbach who came to Berrien County, Michigan. Note: This was Henrietta (Klinger) who married 1st to Ferdinand Tiefenbach and 2nd to Charles Loraff. Leonard was her grandson by her son August Tiefenbach and his wife Caroline (Dzick) Tiefenbach. The cemetery records give William’s date of birth as 18 Oct 1879 and his death date as 28 Dec 1969. These records give Minnies’ birthdate as 12 Nov 1870 and her death date as 27 Nov 1954. William (Minnie Witt) Tiefenbach, 84, of Glendora, died Saturday at 7:45 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emil Rokau, in Glendora. She had suffered a lingering illness for the past three years. Mrs. Tiefenbach was born in Russia Nov. 12, 1870. She came to this community to make her home in 1894. She married to Mr. Tiefenbach, Jan. 14, 1901. Surviving besides her husband and daughter, Mrs. Rokau, are another daughter, Mrs. Frank Priebe, of Derby; four sons, Julius, of Chicago; Emil, of Three Oaks; Charles, of St. Joseph, and Edward, of New Troy; a brother, William Witt, of Bridgman; two sister, Mrs. Tena Nickel and Mrs. Alvina Dehiring, both of Benton Harbor. Mr. Tiefenbach, a retired farmer, was born in Russia, Oct. 18, 1880, and had resided in this area for the past 69 years coming from Russia. His wife, the former Minnie Witt, preceded him in death Nov. 27, 1954. Survivors three sons, Julius, of Chicago, Charles, of Berrien Springs, and Edward, of Buchanan; two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Elsie) Priebe of Stevensville and Mrs. Emil (Lydia) Rockau of Buchanan; a sister, Mrs. Matilda Pufall of Buchanan; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A son Emil, preceded him in death Nov, 29. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Kerlikowske and Starks funeral home. The Rev. H. V. Bucholz, pastor of the Trinity Lutheran church, Glendora, will officiate. Burial will follow in Stevensville cemetery.” Lydia (Rock) Tiefenbach’s obituary was carried in the News Palladium on 17 Jan 1968 and it reads: “Mrs. Lydia Tiefenbach Bridgman-Lydia L. Tiefenbach, 57, of 1004 Wayne street, St. Joseph, died Monday at 11:45 p.m. in the Berrien county hospital, Berrien Center, where she had been a patient for two weeks. Mrs. Tiefenbach was born March 1, 1910, in Germany. She came to this country at the age of one year and had resided in the area for the past 56 years. Surviving are a daughter, Miss Jo Ann Wenger, of St. Joseph; a brother, Henry Rock, of Bridgman, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Boyd funeral home in Bridgman. Dr. Herbert Webber, pastor of the Olivet Congregational church of Bridgman, will officiate. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery, Bridgman. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.” The Obituary for John H. Tiefenbach was carried in the News Palladium on 17 Jul 1973 and it reads: “John Tiefenbach Bridgman-John H. Tiefenbach, 72, of Monogram Hotel, Bridgman, died at 12:15 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph Memorial hospital, following an illness of four days. He was born Aug 3, 1900 in Winnipeg, Canada. Mr. Tiefenbach had resided in Bridgman 60 years, coming from Canada and was retired from Casting Service Company, Bridgman. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran church, Bridgman. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Jo Ann White of Benton Harbor; four brothers, august of St. Joseph, Ferd of Pontiac, Mich., Edward of Lakeland, Fla., and Carl of California and a sister, Mrs. Rose Schultz of Benton Harbor. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Boyd funeral home, Bridgman. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, Bridgman. Friends a may call at the funeral home after 7 this evening.” An obituary for Charles Tiefenbach was carried in the Herald Palladium on 09 Aug 1992 and it reads: “Charles Tiefenbach Charles M. Tiefenbach, 80, of Lake Pine Drive, St. Joseph, formerly of Berrien Springs, died Thursday at Mercy Memorial Medical Center, St. Joseph. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Joseph, of which he was a member. Friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Kerley & Starks Funeral Home, St Joseph. Burial will be in Hickory Bluff Cemetery, Lincoln Township. Memorials may be made to the Charles Tiefenbach Memorial Scholarship Fund. Mr. Tiefenbach was born May 29, 1912, in St. Joseph Township. He retired in 1974, after 18 years as sergeant in the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of the Niles F.O.P. The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Kerley & Starks Funeral Home, St. Joseph, where friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph. Mrs. Tiefenbach was born May 18, 1920, in Saskatchewan, Canada. She was a member of Fairplain Presbyterian Church. In addition to her husband, survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. William (Kathy) Groves of St. Joseph; two sisters-Mrs. Alice Antes of Coloma and Mrs. Leonard (Edna) Polfus of St. Joseph; and two brothers-Arthur Loewen of Davenport, Iowa, and Jack Loewen of Benton Harbor.” Edward A. Tiefenbach, 88, of New Troy, passed away Tuesday, December 06, 2005 at Lakeland Specialty Hospital in Berrien Center. A Celebration of Life Eternal will be held at 10:00 A.M. Mr. Tiefenbach was born January 7, 1917 in Lincoln Township to William & Minnie (Witt) Tiefenbach. He attended Evans School, and graduated 8th grade at St. Paul's Lutheran School before joining his father on the farm. Ed attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was confirmed there in 1931. Ed served his country in the Army Air Force during WWII attaining the rank of Sergeant. On December 4, 1948, he married the former Ada Loewen in Glendora, Michigan. Ed and his family operated a 150 acre fruit farm in New Troy for many years as well as his full time employment at Whirlpool, from which he retired in 1981 after 41 years. Ed was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Whirlpool Oldtimers, and a life member of American Legion Weechick Post #518 of New Troy. He was an avid fisherman, spending many an hour fishing Hickory Creek or on the North Pier fishing for perch. His love of farming continued in his later years on a smaller scale with his vegetable and flower gardens. Ed also enjoyed hunting and bird watching. Ed is survived by his daughter Kathy (Bill) Groves of Berrien Springs; his grandson Jay Groves, and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ada on March 6, 1987, by three brothers-Emil, Julius & Charles Tiefenbach, and by two sisters-Elsie Priebe & Lydia Rochau. He was a lifetime resident of Stevensville and formerly was employed as a foreman at Whirlpool Corp. Have done many research on these Tiefenbach and I could not believe what I found, all spellings, just glad I copied them all out back then and all match to my tree. The next research will be Elsas, that many of our Tiefenbach came from there too, but you know, have to work backwards.” The Marie Margaretha Tiefenbach in this file (4. 8. iii.) is believed to be the one who married Karl Hauch.
