Recently someone asked me about the Brickell family that were once in
Berrien County.
1840's Niles Township, Berrien County, Michigan
Page 4 Barzilla Brickell appears with one male 10 to 15
years of age and 2 males 20 to 30 years of age. Also Females - under 5 years of
age and 1 that is 20 to 30 years of age. Barzilla is the son of Edward
Brickell.

Rebecca Brickell shows with the
following ages of males in the family 1 under 5; 1 5 to 10; 1 is 10 to 15; 1
male 20 to 30 = Females ages are 1 5 to 10; 3 that are 10 to 15 and 1 age 40 to
50.

and killed on 16 Aug 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. Mary E. Brickell age 2 born
Michigan William T. Sullivan age 28 born Ohio Elisha S. Sullivan age 14
born Ohio This family later moved next door to Cass County, Michigan where
they may be found on the census there.
Page 136 Dwelling 42 Brazilla Brickell age 39 originally
from North Carolina (occupation Livery Man) - appears on this census along with
the following. (son of Edward Brickell - per Spokane Co., WA 5 Oct 1894 at
age 85 years) ( in some Census reports, Brazilla aka Barzilla
appears) Caroline M. age 32 from Ohio died Placer, CA circa 1858 and is
buried in Colfax Cemetery, California Josephine age 12 born
Michigan Emeline age 9 born Michigan Minerva age 6 born
Michigan Rosanna age 25 born Ohio (probably Brazilla's sister) Brazilla
Brickell additional Michigan notes. Shows as a petitioner in Wayne Co., MI in
1831 and then in St. Joseph Co., MI in 1833.

Brickell age 32 born Ohio - occupation Farmer Elizabeth age 25 born
VA Jerome F. age 9 born Mich. - 1860 went to Placer, California; 1870 Jerome
can be found with wife Mary A. in Ten Mile, Macon, Missouri - Then on to Macon
Co., Missouri and then moved back to California. Wily A age 5 born
Mich Henry A. age 3 born Mich Montgomery age 3/12 born Mich - born April
1850 - took up the occupation of farming - later married Rose A. Woodford in
Berrien Co., 15 Nov 1876, Moved to South Bend, St. Joseph, Ind. Margaret A.
Felkins age 14 born NY Andrew Hunter age 18 born NY

1850 Robert Brickell appears on the 1850 mortality Schedule for Berrien
County as dying in April 1850 at age 57 from Lung Fever he was from North
Carolina Also dying in May of the same year was Harriet Brickell, 7 years
old born in Michigan.

living in dwelling 557, Niles Michigan, with her SIL - William Bort and
Daughter Lydia (noted born in Indiana) and their children. William Bort is
a nursery man. See note below on Rebecca's final resting place.

So where did all these offspring go? Here's the answer to
some of them. Brazilla headed for California and then Spokane County,
Washington where he lived out the remainder of his life. Lydia Ann
(Brickell) Bort (daughter of Rebecca) went to Nevada County California. She
later moved to Alameda Co., CA. Mary A. Seffins went to Placer Co., CA and
is found there in the 1860 census with her husband Charles.
Many of these families and associated families moved to
California and also Washington state.

Other notes: Same cemetery as Caroline, Brazilla's wife,
has the remains of Ammiel Brickell 1813 to 1851 - brother to Edward J.. Son
of Rebecca; Edward J. Brickell's 2nd wife Rosannah died 1873, burial in same
cemetery per pdf document on line. Also Rebecca (Edward's mother) appears to be
buried here at Colfax Cemetery, Placer Co., CA.
