To know the story of the Ludlow family, we
must go back to England before the Ludlow's arrived in this new world. For those
history buffs, you can check out Edmund Ludlow and his battle with the king.
Another words, I am afraid that, Edmund “backed the wrong horse”. Because of
this many of the Ludlow families fled to the new world. Some, fearing reprisals
from the king, even adapted their name to Ludlam for a brief
time. Talma's father - Stephen Decantor Ludlow was all part of this heritage. His grandfather was John Ludlow who was born abt. 14 Feb 1751 in Long Hill, Morris, New Jersey and later died 26 Mar 1823 in Cincinnati, Ohio. John first married Catherine Cooper on 19 Oct 1772 and after she died on 23 June 1783, he married Susan DeMun. It is noteworthy to mention that one of the children by John & Catherine was a Stephen Ludlow who was born one of several siblings. Sometimes in genealogical research, this Stephen, who went to Dearborn County, Indiana and lived out his life, is confused with his nephew Stephen D. Ludlow, (one of subjects of this report) who also went to Dearborn county. But our Stephen went on to Shelby County, Indiana, where he invested and raised his family. Stephen's father was Cooper Ludlow, son of John Ludlow. Lineage goes (COOPER7, JOHN6, CORNELIUS5, JEREMIAH4, HENRY3 LUDLAM, HENRY2, WILLIAM1). Cooper was born 11 Jun 1783 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Oh, and died 1832 in Springfield, Clark, Ohio. He married (1) ELIZABETH REEDER 04 Oct 1804 in Warren, Oh, daughter of JACOB REEDER. She was born Abt. 1783 in Warren, Oh, and died Abt. 1813 in Clark County, Oh1. He married (2) ELIZABETH LAYTON 1815 in Clark County, OH, daughter of JUDGE LAYTON. Historical Collections of Ohio Vol. 1 = 1805 a tannery built by Cooper Ludlow. According to records, this was the 2nd production business to be set up in Cincinnati, Ohio. Stephen Decantor Ludlow 1. STEPHEN DECANTOR LUDLOW (COOPER7, JOHN6, CORNELIUS5, JEREMIAH4, HENRY3 LUDLAM, HENRY2, WILLIAM1) was born 09 Feb 1809 in Champaign County , now Clark County, Ohio, and died 18 Jul 1884 in Shelbyville, Shelby, IN. He married (1) EMILINE ELIZA KERSEY Abt. 1834 in unknown. She was born 1813 in Maine, and died Abt. 1854 in Marion, Shelby County, IN. He married (2) TERESA AMELIA BLANKENSHIP 03 Sep 1854 in Shelby County, IN3. She was born May 1832 in New York, and died 18 Jun 1916 in Shelbyville, Shelby, IN4. Stephen moved to Dearborn County, Indiana some time before 1840. Reference: Dearborn Co. Census pg. 61 Stephen then Moved to Marion Twp, Shelby county, Indiana in abt 1842 as shown in Beers Atlas, Shelby Co.,IN pg. 106 notes Stephen as a farmer and stock raiser, home steading in Shelby County as of 1842. Stephen was also Shareholder in RR, built in Shelby County – 19 Jan 1846 1850 Appears on the Federal Census with first wife Emeline Eliza Kersey and their children, living in Marion Twp, Shelbyville, Indiana. 1860 Stephen and Teresa appear on the Marion Twp, Shelby County, Indiana Fed Census 1873 - Probate Order Book 9 1869-70. Stephen takes on the guardianship of several Crowley children(Joseph, Jane, Florence, Emma and Stephen). Chadwick's History of Shelby County pg 363 notes Stephen as being the brother of John, a well known banker in Springfield, Ohio. The Biographical Encyclopedia of Ohio of the Nineteenth Century, refer to John Ludlow - organization of the Springfield bank and son of Cooper Ludlow. Stephen's brother John, a banker in Springfield, Ohio also speculated on land in the Shelby County, Indiana. However, as far as records searched, Stephen's brother John never actually lived in Shelby County. Stephen also belonged to the Freemasonry in Shelby County and helped form this Mason group in area along with other community leaders. Burial: Upon Stephen's death in 20 Jul 1884 he was buried on the old Ludlow cemetery on the land he owned. But his second wife Theresa, had his remains moved to, Forest Hill Cemetery, Shelbyville, Indiana. Stephen's will: 11 Oct 1884, Copy of Probate of Will -Shelbyville, IN About Stephen's 1st wife; EMILINE ELIZA KERSEY: In speaking with a county historian, in Shelby County, Indiana it is believed that Emeline is probably buried on the old Ludlow farm in Marion, Shelby county, IN. The cemetery had few burials but unfortunately was destroyed years ago. There were other graves in the now destroyed Ludlow Cemetery. It is also believed that Emeline (nick named) Eliza, probably died during or shortly after giving birth to her second set of twins. Eck - Killed by a Derrick Which Fell upon Him Yesterday. THE SHELBY DEMOCRAT Thursday September 9, 1880 JOHN H. ECK Killed By a Derrick Which Fell Upon Him Yesterday Many of our citizens will read with genuine regret, the account of the sudden and untimely, not to say horrible death, which overtook the subject of this notice on Monday afternoon. He was engaged in re-setting a derrick at the new bridge over Clifty, near Adams, Decatur county, having a contract to do the stone work on the bridge. By some means the cumbersome derrick got a start off those who were hoisting it, and it went crashing to the ground, striking and instantly killing in its descent, Mr. Eck. Mr. Eck was well-known and highly esteemed by merchants and contractors along the line of the C.I. St. L. & C. railroad, and by a large circle of friends in and near St. Paul, the home of his boyhood. A few years ago he married Miss Eva Ludlow, one of the most popular and fascinating ladies of this county (Shelby), and the eldest daughter of Stephen Ludlow, Esq. of Marion township. Mrs. Eck and two young children survive him. (Buried Paul Hill Cemetery) Decatur County, IN John H. Eck d. Sept. 6, 1880 aged 34 yrs 3 ms. & 6 days 7. ELIZA E.
