Samuel Tudor

A true pioneer in the Berrien Springs, Oranoko Township area of this county. He settled in the area sometime around 1836 to 1837 when his father Henry came with the Winslow family, having married one of the daughters.

Samuel was 92 years of age in the year 1927 and suffered not too many infirmities for a man of his age. He was born in Massachusetts and was brought here with his parents when we was only 10 months old. He lived in 3 separate farm houses on the same farm at the edge of town. When the family outgrew it usefulness, another was built. The first home was a two story log cabin built on the river bank.

Mrs. Tudor recalled the river boats that ran up and down the St. Joseph river and then he remembered the Mishawaka, which in his senior years had long rotted in the river near the village. In looking back at the past, Samuel remembered with fondness, the other boats such as the Algoma, the Niles, the Michigan and the Indiana.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Samuel states he was born Aug 1834 in Mass. And Mary A., his wife, Dec 1834 <sic> born in England. - Their children were Paul, Lottie M, Angie and two other children born to them, but died before the 1900 census. One might have been Elvira, who appears on the 1880 census in their household.
