Oldest known stone in the cemetery is
Madeline Ellen Bertrand – died Oct 14, 1846 wf
of Joseph Bertrand Use was basically discontinued in about 1891 when a newer cemetery in Niles was offered for burials. Many of the burials were marked with wooden markers and when the DAR took a tally in the 1920's they were informed that a fire had burned many of the wooden markers, leaving the graves unmarked. Researchers may have to find where the chuch records went after this cemetery was no longer used. They may have deaths and burials listed. Niles Mirror, dated Wednesday, January 10, 1877: "A triple funeral is an unusual occurrence in cities of even greater size than this, but on Sunday last, in Niles, this unusual event took place. A processionabout a mile long passed from the Catholic Church on the west side to the Catholic burial ground at Bertrand, making a very imposing and impressive appearance. First came the remains of Wm. Whaling (sp.), followed by several sleighs containing friends of the deceased, then followed the hearse containing the remains of Thos. Deucey, followed in like manner, finally the hearse containing the remains of Joseph Pukownik Contributed by: Linda Whalen Livingston> Surnames: Dulin, Dulan, Dalin, Doolan) Descendants of Maurice/Morris Doolan and Bridget Margaret Ahern m. about 1826 in Ireland. She was the spouse of Patrick Michael Rodgers and the Mother of Peter, John and Francis Rodgers. She and Patrick Michael lived in Huron County (Goderich) Ontario, Canada until 1871 when she and her family migrated to Niles, Berrien Co., Michigan and resided on 14 acres at Platt St. - North of Lincoln Ave and N. of the Railroad Tracks.
